Dr. Merry Taheri is the first Afghan-American Nurse Practitioner running for the California State Assembly, District 69 to bring the perspective of a wife, mother, and health professional, and advocate the important work of moving our state forward. District 69, which includes parts of Long Beach, Carson, Signal Hill, and Avalon deserves a representative who has on-the-ground experience addressing the health needs of real people. The pandemic has exposed the weaknesses in our system and the inequities in health access that too many residents in District 69 — and throughout our state — confront on a daily basis.

Overcoming obstacles and challenges is nothing new for Merry. As a young girl in Afghanistan, Merry was orphaned when her father, a surgeon, along with her mother and younger sister were assassinated by the Russian military. Merry's father's persistent refusal to join the Communist regime and desire to help humanity ultimately cost them their lives. Merry was only seven, and after being smuggled out of Afghanistan with her only surviving sibling, she returned to the United States where she was born.

  • Housing Provide incentives for responsible developers and homeowners to make efficient use of land. Mixed-use neighborhoods increase walkability, diversity, and opportunities to live near jobs and transit centers. 60% of residents in Long Beach are renters. Tenant protection is essential to ensure that families are not at risk of needless eviction into homelessness. Break down red tape allowing for a more streamlined process of ADU approval for supplemental rental income and more housing options.
  • Healthcare Healthcare is a fundamental right. Establish universal coverage in California. Expand access to reproductive services.
  • Education Provide mental health services to students, faculty, and school administrators. The pandemic has devastated our youths academically and emotionally. Improve technical training to prepare our workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. Expand free tuition at community colleges to all.
Homelessness, housing, and health as well as the environment
I always looked up to my grandmother growing up because it was inspiring that as a young child she was married off due to cultural beliefs and not able to attend school yet she persevered and always encouraged and empowered me to continue my education and live my life to the fullest! I would like to continue to empower and encourage girls and women the way I was brought up by my grandmother that there is NOTHING that we as women are not able to accomplish if we put the time and effort in it.
Government has a duty to protect the most vulnerable residents as well as underserved communities. COVID has revealed health inequities, especially in the black, Latino, and other underserved communities like the Cambodian community and low-income essential workers in my district, Long Beach, and surrounding areas.

In California, there are 150,000 experiencing homelessness of which 70,000 are in Los Angeles County and 3,000 in Long Beach.
Housing first is the best solution for the homelessness crisis. Our homeless population in Los Angeles County has increased by 12% every year. People become homeless when they can no longer afford housing, healthcare, and inability to overcome disabilities. People need stable homes so that they can successfully be treated. In addition to temporary shelters, we need to build more permanently affordable housing. Project home key has successfully converted motels into permanent supportive housing, this is the best method to reduce the homelessness crisis. The best way of preventing homelessness is to make sure that people have the resources to stay in their homes.
On average, it costs $40,000 to support a person experiencing homelessness per year. If we put a fraction of this amount into keeping people in their homes we would reduce the homeless population.
California has designated $12 billion dollars into homelessness services. Because there is no reporting, we don’t know how the resources are spent. It is important for us to have reports from the city, county, and agencies that provide care for people experiencing homelessness.
Currently, we do not have transparency on how cities and counties are spending state money for homelessness.

Healthcare is a fundamental right. Healthcare should not be a profit-driven venture. Many times people become homeless because they have an illness and are unable to pay for their healthcare.

I believe that universal coverage should be a state mandate.
Integrity, honesty, compassion, hard work, perseverance, and not being afraid to stand for the truth regardless of the consequences if it means being the voice for those who are unheard!
Dr. Merry Taheri was a true servant of the people! I love our country and people beyond comprehension.
It was losing my entire family including my parents and my four-year-old sister at the hands of the Russian communist regime when I was 7 years old due to the persistent refusal of my father who was a surgeon and continued to help humanity.
at age 12 helped my friend's parents paint the house. During my entire middle school years, I also helped my uncle sweep the floors of the salon he worked at and do the salon's laundry and fold their towels. My professional career as a nurse was in Pomona Valley Hospital Emergency and Trauma for two years then Kaiser for 11 years as a Nurse/Nurse Practitioner and currently at the Department of Health Services Los Angeles County for 14.5 years as a Nurse Practitioner.
The Kite Runner. It resonates with some of the struggles and trials that I have experienced as many Afghans and people affected by invasions, wars, and tragedies.
"I hope you dance" by Lee Ann Womack
I have faced many struggles since my early childhood when my entire family was assassinated by the Russian communist regime but hard work, and continuing to believe in humanity and goodness has helped me through many struggles of my life.
It hurts to have lost my entire family at such an early age, every day I can choose to dwell on this or make the most of this amazing opportunity called life that has been bestowed upon me so that I can help make others smile and give them hope that I believe in.
There should be respect and professionalism as well as a compromise as long it does not affect the ultimate decision of harming our country and people
Homelessness and mental health and substance use services that need to be improved.

Housing and health.
All three that I mentioned: homelessness, housing, and health are intertwined and one affects the other in a great way. Therefore, it is essential that all three of these greatest challenges need to be addressed urgently.

Climate change is also a huge challenge we are facing and worsening daily.
It depends on the legislators: some yes but many at this time have proven themselves otherwise given our economic status, homeless, and housing as well as health and climate crisis. I feel that many have done a disservice and injustice and need to be replaced as soon as possible. Many of them are trying to please their donors and there to make friends thus compromising the real people and voters' lives and our communities.
It is always beneficial to build relationships regardless of being a democrat or a republican as we are all Americans first! We should always try to collaborate and work for the better of our communities, state, and country and put our differences as well as our biases aside.
Yes, senator congress only if I am allowed to truly represent the voters and the working people not playing games and trying to fit in with groups or clicks as I am not interested in that when it comes to politics. I want to get in and roll up my sleeves and get to work the first day of swearing. We have major crisis to deal with in our state and district.
There were several lions and one fox as they are all strolling in the forest, they suddenly stop, then the fox turns to the lions and says so where are we going next? meaning he is a lion as well or part of their pack :) it makes me laugh every time as my brother would tell it so well
It is definitely desirable; however, compromising should not be at the cost of your morals, values, and ethics regardless of how significant the consequences may be.
