Picarelli said in an interview with YES! Weekly that his campaign would focus on economic development, public safety and race relations.[2]

Regarding economic development, Picarelli said that he would like to emphasize the city's return on investment when trying to bring in more jobs. He added that he believed in the importance of "building a good tax base" to support city services and being "a good steward of public money."[2]

We’ve got to be smart with what we do and consider our return on investment on growth. We need to be able to be smart and grow inside specific sectors.[3]
—Michael Picarelli[2]

Regarding race relations, Picarelli said,

We need to take into consideration the makeup of Greensboro and not really look at a one-size-fits-all approach. We are fortunate enough that we have a lot of good history here within the Civil Rights Movement. We need to turn that into a positive.[3]
