I am a 5th generation Iowan. I am a husband and father. I graduated from Valley HS and the University of Iowa, and work as a Pharmacy Professor at Drake University and as a pharmacist.
  • Public Education: While I am a supporter of education and of all teachers, I focus on supporting Public Education. Public Education is the pathway to success for all Iowans. Iowa used to be proud of being a national leader in public education and it is troubling to see Iowa slide down the ratings over the past decade. I support full funding of Public Education at all levels, and the rate of increase of funding needs to be tied to the rate of inflation. There also needs to be an additional 1% per year until funding is at 2000 levels, adjusted for inflation.
  • Healthcare: Access to health care services for all Iowans is becoming increasingly difficult. This is not just a problem with insurance coverage, but a problem of providers being available in all areas. Iowa needs innovative solutions that partner the public and private sectors to improve access to medical care, especially mental health care, dental care, and affordable access to medications.
  • Preparation & Civility: My years of experience and training have prepared me to be an effective legislator. Regardless of our backgrounds, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or religious views, Iowans have much in common and together we can get things done.
Being a pharmacy educator and pharmacist, I of course am passionate about my profession but that extends to all areas of healthcare. I am passionate about public education being available to as a ladder to success for all Iowans: I was able to climb that ladder with the help of those who came before me, and I want to hold that ladder for the next generations of Iowans. I have seen the effects that bullying has on anyone singled out for being seen as being different, and I want all Iowans to respect each other, even though we may disagree on issues.
I believe that the core responsibility for someone elected to this office is to be responsive to the citizens of the district. I say citizens because that includes everyone in the district.
I want to leave a legacy of having moved my profession forward, that my students use what I taught to take care of patients well, and that my work in the legislature (if elected) helped Iowans live a better life.
The first historical event that I remember clearly was the Apollo 1 fire at (the time) Cape Kennedy. I was 7 years old at the time.
I believe that the ideal relationship is where both sides treat each other with respect and work to understand each others priorities and positions on issues. Neither should be beholden to each other, both sides need to be independent voices.
The greatest challenge will be to have a thriving economy based on sustainable business models. A large part of that challenge is going to be keeping and attracting younger workers, many of which may not fit the "traditional" Iowa profile. You cannot have a thriving economy based on retirees working minimum wage retail jobs.
Yes, I believe that compromise is often necessary or desirable for policymaking.
While we all have the "perfect" outcome as a goal, any policy maker should have a minimum outcome that they are willing to accept and to be flexible as to what they will accept between those two borders.
