Campaign themes

2016

Bennett's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Boosting Income and Employment

  • Creating Higher paying Jobs and making the minimum wage closer to a living wage are foundational to addressing income inequality. Help families and workers obtain self-sufficiency. Increasing opportunities for childcare subsidies and early childhood education will help balance families and their needs.
  • The current GE Tax unfairly affects the lower income workers at a disproportionate rate. Additional tax fairness measures are needed so that working families are not taxed deeper into poverty.

Housing and Homelessness

  • Addressing affordable housing and homelessness represents one of our biggest challenges.
  • Utilize Innovative housing models and adopt renters subsidies to support those willing to work in exchange for low cost housing options.
  • Update the small rental subsidy program to families who are just short of income they need to Avoid homelessness.
  • Fund truly affordable housing developments by adopting Inclusionary Zoning.

Leading the Nation in Homelessness

  • Mental Health and Drug Addiction both lead to a downward drift and without addressing the underlying cause, we will not move toward the proper solution. Outsourcing away from current state funded, DMV style helper models, we need to support and encourage the private sector health and addiction specialists to help find appropriate avenues for treatment.
  • Ohana: Community and family is what makes Hawaii great. We need to apply the same principles here and IF someone wants to work, we should help the business community find these workers a job. Handouts and the giving free everything has driven many a country into poverty. If we have learned anything from, Africa, Haiti, and other third world "giving programs", its that the most sure way to destroy an economy is to give it to them for free.
  • Nomadic Roamers and migrants: We Have laws and regulations in place and address the crisis that is spreading across our state. We are allowed and need to send those who are loitering and living on our public resources elsewhere. If we decide, by voting, to adopt and pay for this subset - It would be MUCH Cheaper and we could provide a much higher quality of care by subsidizing their lives in a less expensive state. Much like our prison system, we can outsource, cloth, house and feed them more efficiently elsewhere.

Education

  • We need to Put the teachers and the students first. Here Again we have an efficiency problem. We only get what we pay for and We CURRENTLY pay in the top 25% of all the states in the union, yet our teachers are the Lowest Paid in the country. High quality early childhood education and increased financial support for schools not only helps our children, but is helps our families. Educational programs can Not be looked at in isolation - poverty prevention and balancing achievement goals must be tackled on a systemic level.[1]
