Candidate Connection

Michael Cantu completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Cantu's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Economy Education Water Issues

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe that Commomn Core is a disaster for our children, and we need to get back to the basics of education.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

President Trump. I believe that his instincts on the economy and foreign policy are dead on the money.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Everyone should read 1984 by George Orwell, Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg. These books are a dim prognostication of our future if we do not preserve our individual freedom.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, Intergity, work ethic, intelligence, determination and a clear understanding of the issues.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

All of the qualities listed above.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To deliver policy changes that will directly benefit the residents of their district and state in general.

What legacy would you like to leave?

To know that I contributed to the quality of life for every individual that I encountered.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I was in the 4th grade when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Selling TV Guides and I worked there for several months. I was 10 years old.

What happened on your most awkward date?

We were at the drive in and I almost choked to death on a popcorn kernel. It blocked my windpipe and I couldn't breathe.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas because it is a season of cheer, giving and brotherhood.

What is your favorite book? Why?

1984 by George Orwell, because it is a reminder of the looming tyranny that waits like a wolf outside our door to devour liberty.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Superman

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My guitar because I like to play.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Don't Stop Believing by Journey

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Life is a struggle, but we adapt and overcome.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

No. Some of the best politicians are people that had never previously held office before. President Trump never held public office and I believe that he will go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents of all time.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Water and environmental issues.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

To be on the same page politically.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Absolutely, because relationships are essential to. build support for your legislation.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Possibly

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I met a lady who was in the WACs during World War II who went to the SS office for help because she was having a hard time financially, and they offered her 15 dollars a month extra in food stamps. I found this unacceptable. This woman served our country and was tossed aside like an old shoe. These are the kind of things that we need to change in our society.
