Michael Cox was a 2016 Independence candidate for District 25 of the New York State Senate. He also ran as a Democratic candidate, but was defeated in the Democratic primary.

Campaign themes

2016

Cox's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Economy & Jobs

Fix the jobs / skills mismatch – I will introduce legislation to create grant and scholarship programs to provide Brooklyn residents access training for the Tech industry.

Education

Guidance Counselors and Social workers, not police – Many students in our community face unique challenges due to generational poverty, homelessness, and a lack of resources. We must provide our children with the resources necessary to meet their individualized needs. This will provide the nurturing learning environment our children deserve and, in many instances, break the School to Prison Pipeline, especially among students with special needs. On day one I will introduce legislation to increase access to Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, and School Psychologists.

Housing

Increase funding for affordable housing – Housing is among the most important and essential human needs. I will fight--everyday--to increase affordable housing for our district and make sure people are not being taken advantage of.

Criminal Justice reform

Decriminalization of minor offenses; Building Community and Police relations - We must ensure that we continue to scrutinize and decriminalize minor offenses; train officers to diffuse small infractions, and build trust and respect among police officers and communities of color.[1]
