Michael Ertel
Michael Ertel was the 34th Florida secretary of state. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appointed Ertel, a Republican, on December 28, 2018. Ertel assumed office in January 2019.[1][2] Ertel resigned on January 24, 2019. Click here for more information on his resignation.
Ertel previously worked as the supervisor of elections in Seminole County, Florida. Gov. Jeb Bush (R) appointed Ertel to this position in 2005. Ertel was re-elected to the position in 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2016.[2]
Biography
Ertel attended the University of Maryland University College and graduated from the journalism program at the Defense Information School. He also completed the Crummer mini-MBA at Rollins College in 2015. He previously worked as a writer and journalist. He served in the U.S. Army for eight years.[2]

Governor Ron DeSantis (R) appointed Ertel as Florida secretary of state. Ertel assumed office in January 2019.[2] He resigned on January 24, 2019.
Resignation
Ertel resigned on January 24, 2019, after photos emerged showing him in blackface. The photos were from a Halloween party in 2005. Ertel allegedly went to the party as a Hurricane Katrina victim. Ertel confirmed to the Tallahassee Democrat that he was the person in the photos.[3]
