Michael F. Zullas was a 2016 Democratic candidate for the Seventh Norfolk District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Zullas' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Advancing Public Education

  • We know that a first-class education is key to overcoming economic inequality. To that end, we need to focus on the following
  • Early childhood literacy, so that all our children are reading at grade level by the third grade.
  • Tackling achievement gaps, so that all our children have equal opportunity.
  • Equity in Chapter 70 funding, so that communities like Randolph are not unfairly disadvantaged solely because of their demographic make-up.

Addressing Income Inequality

  • We need to do everything we can to support of our lower and middle income neighbors, including:
  • Supporting for the Fair Share Amendment, which will raise the state income tax to 9% for incomes over $1 Million, so that of our lower and middle income neighbors don’t continue to unfairly bear the brunt of needed investments in public colleges, public transportation, and infrastructure improvement.
  • Making the Massachusetts income tax fair by raising the level at which high income earners pay to allow for tax cuts for middle and lower income tax earners, which will put money in their pockets and boost the economy.
  • Making 529 college savings accounts tax deductible in Massachusetts, so that families saving for their child’s college education get some relief. We’re one of only eight states that does not allow that deduction so we’re behind the curve on this as well.

Protecting Our Seniors

  • I want to be the advocate for our seniors in state government. Here are a few areas that need to be addressed immediately:
  • It makes no sense that our seniors are forced to travel all the way to Charlestown in order to apply or renew their eligibility for THE RIDE. Let me take the case to the MBTA to make THE RIDE certification local.
  • Local officials have a plan to fix the traffic nightmare on Neponset Valley Parkway at Paul’s Bridge. That plan is being held up by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Let me take the case to the DCR to move that project along so that our seniors can travel that road without fear.
  • Our seniors need to be assured that first responders and medical assistance are available nearby.
  • We need comprehensive surveys to determine the services that our seniors need and want. Only with that data can we match the funding to the true needs.

Inequitable Airplane Traffic

  • I want to be the advocate to fight against the inequity of the current Area Navigation (RNAV) system. We need the concerted effort of local, state, and federal officials to put private, public, and legal pressure on the FAA and MassPort. We need to use all the legal options available – public and private – to find relief.

Equality and Opportunity

  • I believe that we must redouble our efforts to work towards equal rights, equal protections, and equal opportunity for those who have been unfairly denied these basic elements of citizenship, including people of color, women, and the LGBT community. That work should include:
  • The recognition that patent and latent racism continues, and that we must use all legal means to stamp out discrimination of every kind.
  • Ensuring that women have the right to choose and the opportunity to determine how to safeguard their own reproductive health.
  • Protecting and enhancing the rights of those in the LGBT community, including support for the gender identity bill that has passed the Legislature.[1]
