|Most importantly, I’m a father, running for Congress because I want my child to live, learn and play in a safe community. I’m a son who wants my parents to have the health care they need, retirement savings they earned and dignity they deserve. I’m an educator who wants every child to have access to world-class education and teachers to have the resources to do their job. I’m a civil rights lawyer who knows how our criminal justice system over-polices, overcharges and over-sentences people of color and poor people. I’m a former union member who understands organized labor is instrumental to increasing wages and benefits for all of the 13th District. I’m a proud Democrat, who, like our President, is more concerned with getting stuff done than scoring political points.
And I’m a product of this district, ready to work with you to build a better future together.
- More jobs and better wages for workers: Wages haven’t gone up nearly as fast as the price of food, gas, housing and transportation. As your Congressman, I’ll fight for better conditions and wages for all workers. I’ll pursue funding for apprenticeships and trade schools that provide meaningful, experience-based training for 21st-century jobs. And I’ll cultivate a culture of innovation that encourages small business owners to invest in our communities. As a former MEA member and the son of two AFT members, my beliefs were forged by my parents’ dedication to organized labor and collective bargaining. As your Congressman, I will always stand with organized labor and support organization efforts to secure better conditions and pay.
- A world-class education for children and more resources for teachers: Currently, inadequate education funding leaves some children treated as second-class citizens and hard-working teachers underpaid, worn out and ready to quit. As an educator, I know the way to a better life is providing every child access to a world-class education and ensuring teachers have the resources to do their job. As your Congressman, I’ll fight to provide free Pre-K to every child in the District. I’ll work to reduce classroom size by supporting the hiring of more teachers and ensuring they are paid what they deserve. I’ll also work to expand access to trade schools and apprenticeships, and make community college free for the residents of the 13th.
- Affordable health care and lower prescription drug costs: Our district is still recovering from the losses we suffered under COVID-19. As your Congressman, I’ll seek to expand access to affordable, high-quality health care as a fundamental right for Michiganders across our district. No one should have to drive to Canada to afford refilling their insulin prescription. As your Congressman, I will fight to increase access to high-quality health care, lower the cost of prescription drugs and strengthen our public commitment to mental health care. I’ll push to reevaluate our public health infrastructure and make strategic investments that help prevent and respond to future health emergencies.
First, we need better wages, educational opportunities, and health care access. We need policy answers to the over-incarceration and over-sentencing of people of color and poor people. We need a leader who can put partisanship aside and work across the aisle to make the American dream possible for everyone.
I’m also passionate about the issues that impact the people of this district: the steadily rising cost of food and gas, the importance of fixing our infrastructure, and ensuring greater opportunities for homeownership.
Beyond my career, I chose to raise my family here in this district because I see a future here. A future that means good-paying jobs, quality education, safe neighborhoods and a path for our children to grow up and succeed here, too.
