Michael Hanley was the commissioner of education for Alaska. Hanley was appointed to his position by Governor Sean Parnell (R) on February 3, 2011.[1] Governor Bill Walker (I) asked for Hanley's letter of resignation in February of 2016. Hanely complied and resigned, effective March 1, 2016.[2][3]
Susan McCauley, the director of the Education Department's teaching and learning support division, was named as his interim successor.[2]
Biography
Hanley worked as a teacher in the Anchorage School District from 1991 to 2005.[1] He then served as an elementary school principal in the Anchorage School District from 2005 to January 2011. In addition to his experience in the education sector, Hanley also owned and operating commercial fishing and landscaping businesses prior to his appointment as commissioner of education.[1][4]

Hanley began his tenure as Alaska Commissioner of Education in February 3, 2011. He was appointed by Governor Sean Parnell (R).[1]
Hanley announced in February 2016 that he would resign the following month upon the request of Gov. Bill Walker (I). Gov. Walker explained in a news release that he and the Board of Education made a decision to "steer the state's education system in a new direction."[2] Hanley was the last member of Parnell's cabinet to resign during Walker's administration. Hanley was temporarily replaced by Susan McCauley. Michael Johnson was then selected to replace McCauley, effective July 1, 2016.[3]
