Michael J. Murphy was a judge on the Illinois First District Appellate Court, Third Division. He was appointed to this position in 2005 and retained by election in 2006[1] to replace former Judge Hartigan.[2][3] He died on Oct. 1, 2012.[4]

Education

Judge Murphy received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University and his law degree from the John Marshall Law School, where he was the valedictorian of his class. He taught law at various universities throughout his career.[1]

Career

Judge Murphy began his career as a special agent in the U.S. Treasury Department's Organized Crime Division. He also worked as an Assistant Attorney General and the Executive Director of the South East Chicago Commission before becoming a judge. In 1985, he became an associate judge on the Cook County Circuit Court. He was elected Circuit Judge for this court in 1992. During his time on this court, he worked as the supervising judge in Housing Court and later as the presiding judge of the Court's County Division. In 2005, he was appointed to the Appellate Court.[1]
