Michael J. Powers

Michael J. Powers was a resident judge of the Twelfth Circuit in Illinois.[1] He was elected to the court in 2010.[2] Powers was retained in the general election on November 8, 2016.
Education
Powers earned a B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1984. He went on to receive his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School in 1987.[3]

Prior to his judicial appointment, Powers was an assistant state's attorney for Will County. He also worked for 13 years at the law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson, where he was became a partner.[3]

Judges of the Illinois Circuit Court stand for retention after their first full term. To be retained, a judge must receive at least 60 percent of the vote.[4][5] Michael J. Powers was retained in the Illinois Twelfth Circuit Court, Michael Powers Retention Election with 76.88 percent of the vote.

Powers defeated Democrat Gary S. Mueller with 55.11 percent of the vote in the general election.[2][6][7]
