Prior to being appointed commissioner of education, Johnson was the superintendent of the Copper River School District in Alaska. Before becoming superintendent, Johnson held a number of other positions in the district, including school principal, district curriculum and staff development director, elementary school teacher, and special education program assistant.[3]

Johnson was appointed Alaska commissioner of education by the Alaska Board of Education on June 17, 2016. He was initially one of four finalists, until two candidates withdrew their applications. Johnson was the permanent replacement selected for former superintendent Michael Hanley, who had been appointed during Gov. Sean Parnell's tenure.[1] Johnson resigned on June 30, 2022.[2]
