E. Michael Kavanagh was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department. He was appointed to the 1st Department of the Appellate Division by Governor Pataki on November 17, 2006 and was later appointed to the 3rd Department on February 11, 2008.[1] He retired at the end of his 14-year term on the Supreme Court on December 31, 2012.[2]

Education

Judge Kavanagh graduated from Merrimack College in 1965 and from Villanova University School of Law in 1968. He then served in the Army until 1970.[1]

Career

Judge Kavanagh began his legal career with the law firm Munley & Mead in 1968. From 1970 to 1974, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney in New York County. He moved to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office in 1974 and worked there as the Chief Assistant DA until 1978, when he was elected Ulster County District Attorney. After 20 years in this position, he was elected to the Supreme Court of the State of New York in 1998.[1]

2012 election

Kavanagh ran for re-election to the Supreme Court 3rd District in 2012. He was endorsed by the Republican and Independence parties in the general election. Kavanagh was defeated in the general election, receiving 20.44% of the vote.[3][4][5]
