Elections for the New Hampshire State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on September 9, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 13, 2014. Incumbent Peggy Gilmour was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Kevin Avard defeated Michael McCarthy in the Republican primary. Gilmour and Avard faced off in the general election.[5] Challenger Avard defeated Gilmour in the general election.[6]

McCarthy won re-election in the 2012 election for New Hampshire House of Representatives, Hillsborough 29. McCarthy advanced past the September 11 primary and won re-election in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[7][8]
2010
On November 2, 2010, McCarthy was re-elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives.[9][10]
2008
On November 4, 2008, McCarthy was elected by finishing third for the three-seat Hillsborough 21 District of the New Hampshire House of Representatives receiving 1,867 votes recorded from the recount. Before the recount, he had received 1,872 votes. The recount did not change the election outcome, and he still placed behind Democrats Suzanne Harvey (2,187 recounted to 2,195) and Paul Hackel (1,883 recounted to 1,887) and above Democrat Roberto Fuentes (1,817 recounted to 1,823), and Republicans Elenore Crane (1,679 recounted to 1,675) and Donald McClarren (1,612 recounted to 1,611).[11]
