McDermott was a 2012 Libertarian candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 3rd Congressional District of New York. He was defeated by Steve Israel on November 6, 2012.[3]
According to his website, McDermott worked as a real estate broker and developer from 2001 to 2008.[2]

Tom Suozzi (D) defeated Jack Martins (R) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Suozzi defeated Anna Kaplan, Jon Kaiman, Steven Stern, and Jonathan Clarke in the Democratic primary.
