I was born and raised in SE MI. My first exposure to Leelanau County was in 1993 when I was the Director of Golf at Sugar Loaf. After meeting my wife, through a golf lesson, I embarked on a 32 year career as a senior executive at PepsiCo. While in Memphis, TN, I also served for 10 years on the Board of Freds, a Memphis, TN based company with $2B in annual revenue. I served as the Chair of the Governance Committee and served on Audit Committee. Since moving to Northport in 2019 I've been actively involved in the community, including bringing the first end to end fiber optic to the County, serving as Race Director for the Northport Run for Cancer Funds, President of Northport Pickle Ball, Chairman of NLTUA (Northport Leelanau Township Utility Authority) and most recently as Supervisor of Leelanau Township. In the 16 months as Supervisor I have reduced the tax exposure to residents by $270,000 with an additional $1.1 million intended to be saved over the next four years. We have also stabilized the balance sheet for NLTUA through adopting the rate study suggestions. Lastly, I have partnered w/the Village Manager and the DNR to secure land (owned by the Township) w/the intension of using the land to a address affordable rents.
  • Affordable Rents. Partnering w/the Village leadership, the DNR and Housing North, we are on the cusp of securing land to address the critical need for affordable rents.
  • Fiscal accountability. Set into place an annual budgetary process that serves the needs of the community while not burdening the residents with millage surpluses.
  • Vision 2024. Develop a strategic plan that will guide the direction we take as a community for the next 10 years. A open process for the various stakeholders with a concentration on forecasting population, demographics, capital spending plan and delivering aligned solutions for our parks, roads and housing needs.
My grandma Shea, even after her passing in 1986, she still inspires me. She immigrated to the US from Ireland as a 14 year old. She always worked, never a complaint, optimistic, even to her last days as an employee for runaway girls. I subscribe to the 'glass is half-full' theory b/c of her spirit.
The ability to work w/other when your own views don't necessarily align w/their views. Listening w/apathy is critical in achieving the goals of the community.
I've learned to be a good listener or as a person told me, "there's a reason God gave you two years and one mouth"
Working w/the various local governments and agencies, we were able to deliver on our promise to provide affordable rents.
My first W2 was as a 14 year old cart boy at a local golf course, making $1.50/hour. Prior to that I cut lawns and babysat.
An open process from start to finish, not just in the annual budget process but during those periods where the budget needs to be amended. Our local government should constantly review the millage needs of the community with the goal of not accumulating unnecessary reserves.
