Michael Murphy (Florida)
Michael Murphy is a judge of the Florida 9th Circuit Court. His current term ends on January 7, 2031.
Murphy won re-election for judge of the Florida 9th Circuit Court outright in the general election on November 5, 2024, after the primary and general election were canceled.
Biography
Education
Murphy received both his B.S. degree (in business administration) and his J.D. degree from the University of Florida. He was admitted to the Bar in 1995. He has taught at the University of Central Florida since 2008.[1][2][3]
Career
Murphy practiced with Donald A. Lykkebak from 1995 to 1996. He then served briefly as an assistant state attorney for the 18th Judicial Circuit. From 1998 through 2004, he worked as a sole practitioner. He also practiced with the University of Central Florida's student legal services from 2000 to 2004. In 2005, he joined the Orange County Court. He then joined the circuit court in 2011.[2][3]

Selection method

There are 597 judges on the Florida Circuit Court, each elected via nonpartisan elections. They serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to retain their seat.[4]
The chief judge is selected by peer vote and serves in that capacity for two years.
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[4]
- a qualified elector;
- a state resident;
- admitted to practice law in the state for five years; and
- under the age of 75 (retirement at 75 is mandatory).

Murphy was unopposed and automatically re-elected following the primary election on August 14, 2012.[5]
