What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Transparency, Accountability, & Fiscal Reform
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Education and Housing are my two main passions when it comes the horrendous issues Oregon is currently facing. Why education tops the list is simply because it's the most basic thing people need. As the saying goes - information is power. Without information and education, people would not be able to better themselves. Our kids right now are being short changed from being able to build that tool set. Its horrific that we are near last in the nation when it comes to our education system and similarly the same when it comes to the high school graduation rate. How are we letting this happen? In a close second for why I agreed to run is Oregon's current housing crisis. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason for Oregon to have the current housing shortage that we do. We are one of the most (if not THE MOST) blessed state in the union when it comes to our natural resources. Our air is clean, our water is clean, we have plentiful timber, wild life, fishing, and a farming industry. The reason why I point those industries out is to showcase our Oregon economy should be ripe for success. Yet despite all this, we find ourselves in a horrendous housing and homelessness crisis. Why is this happening when we have so much going for us? The answer is simple - it's poor management and leadership. ALL OREGONIANS should have the best opportunity their willing to work for when it comes to obtaining their dreams. Obtaining affordable housing (whether it's buying or renting) - should have bountiful options in our local economy. The real situation - we have a severe shortage, which in turns drives up costs from simply the law of supply versus demand. Oregonians clearly have a high demand for affordable housing, yet there isn't enough supply available. Why is that? As a real estate professional, I know first hand it's because of Oregon's poor mismanagement of resources and unnecessary burdens placed on both home owners and real estate developers. Oregon needs to reevaluate how they are currently dictating their current housing laws on their citizens. Ask yourself as a home owner, landlord, estate holder, or land owner - are the current laws and regulations making it easy for you to either pass on, sell, or develop your property on your terms? As a renter - does it seem like you're paying a LOT more than you use to just a few years ago? If you arrived similar answers that I have - be assured we can fix this. It will involve us coming together and trying new things. Anything less would be insanity. How can we expect different results if we keep doing the same things?
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Being accountable, seeking mutual buy in, being a strong negotiator, and an advocate for ALL people (rich, poor, strong, weak, young, and older; no matter their background, beliefs, or situation).
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
40th President Ronald Reagan's last day as President of the United States of America. I remember being in 3rd grade, attending a school called Rose City Park Elementary, and being around six years old (just about to turn seven in a few months later in May). Our teacher at the time had her class watch the historical event on TV as President Reagan gave his last farewell speech to America before stepping down. While I didn't fully understand it at the time, looking back I can appreciate how big of a deal that was for the generations before. It was during his Presidency that my parents immigrated to the United States in 1982. They can attest to having the opportunities they did to work hard, buying their first home, obtaining their degrees, finding good paying employment, and providing a life they couldn't even dream of back in Vietnam. I thank them for their hard work and America as a nation, for giving me the life that I have today. While there are always hard times each of us face, we still as a country are made up of dreams, opportunities, ambitions, diversity, liberty, and freedom. Should I have the chance, I wish to pay that forward to the generations after me. After all, we live in the BEST country in the world - which is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
