Michael is a natural born fighter. Born with a congenital heart defect, he has survived three open heart surgeries - and knows the all-too-familiar struggle of dealing with private insurance companies to receive access to affordable health care. He served as a board member for the Adult Congenital Heart Association, and fights tirelessly for the millions of Americans born with heart defects. Michael is an accomplished voting rights lawyer. Michael has been on the front lines fighting against voter suppression and gerrymandering, litigating against states like Florida and Louisiana in court, testifying before state legislatures, and preparing legislation to help protect the right to vote. Michael is frequently quoted in the media for his expertise on voting rights issues and his work has been relied upon by the United States Supreme Court. Michael is a fighter for better government right here on Long Island, having recently served on the Nassau County Board of Ethics, where he pushed for more transparency and accountability in our local government. Michael grew up here in Nassau County and is a graduate of Wesleyan University and New York University School of Law. After graduating from law school, Michael was an attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Michael and his wife are Rockville Centre homeowners.
Make Long Island More Affordable. Too many young adults are leaving Long Island, never to return. Too many families are struggling with ever-increasing property taxes. And too many small businesses are shuttering their doors permanently. We need to make Long Island affordable and attractive by lowering the tax burden, incentivizing smart growth, expanding job opportunities, and investing in our downtowns and transportation infrastructure.

Combat Corruption And Waste. New York State and Nassau County have a repugnant history of public servants who violate the public trust through self-dealing, waste, and corruption. Enough is enough. We need dramatic reforms to root out misconduct and make it clear that the old way of doing business is over. We need to clean up every level of government by strengthening the tools available to state and local officials to investigate and prosecute public corruption and root out waste.

Protect Our Democracy. Voting should be easy and accessible to all. Too many of our elected officials are working overtime to undermine our democracy and attack the legitimacy of our electoral system. Nobody should suffer voting discrimination based on the color of their skin or their partisan affiliation. We must pass the New York Voting Rights Act, alongside other common sense reforms, aimed at ensuring access to the ballot box across New York. And we need stronger campaign finance laws to ensure that our politicians are responsive to voters, not donors.
I will push for a new constitutional amendment to adopt a process that will work for voters. Specifically, I support a nonpartisan redistricting commission comprised not of political appointees, but a diverse group of qualified experts who are charged with drawing lines free from politics.
