My wife and I have six grandchildren and one great grand baby. We were privileged to be the day care for the four grandchildren who lived in our area and are now doing the same for our great grand baby.
My teaching career began when I graduated from Oklahoma University certified to teach math and science. I taught for twenty-two years in the Tulsa Public School system.
I attended my first TPS School Board meeting on May 2, 2022, and have attended virtually every regular school board meeting since then. My motivation was first to understand what the board needs to do doing to ensure that the TPS students get the most out of their education. I learned that (1) the administration presents a packed agenda of expenditures, (2) all seven members are not finished discussing the agenda before the vote is taken, and (3) the board vote is 4-3, 5-2, or 6-1 in favor of all agenda items.- I want the board to openly discuss the expenditures the administration presents so that the public and all board members are fully aware of how the money is being spent.
- I want more of the money directed to the classroom and classroom teacher and less to the administration in the service center. I want accountability in the classroom, rewarding excellence.
- I pledge independence from the TPS administration.Re

Campaign website
Phillips' campaign website stated the following:
Michael’s Vision
If elected he pledges to press for:
(1) options the board can openly discuss
(2) agenda items that allow the board to fulfill its duty of setting the vision for the district
(3) the ability to temporarily postpone portions of the agenda to a date certain so that the board can investigate the usefulness of the items for educating children
He pledges to serve his constituents by soliciting and reporting their input, making the successful education of children the primary concern, and using his judgment when voting.
