Michael Schneider (U.S. District Court)
Michael Schneider was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He first joined the court in 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush and served as a senior judge from January 7, 2016, until his retirement on October 1, 2016.[1]
Early life and education
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Schneider obtained his Associate's degree from Lon Morris College in 1963 before receiving his bachelor's degree in 1965 from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Schneider obtained his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1970. Schneider obtained an LL.M. from the University of Virginia Law School in 2001.[1]
Professional career
Schneider was an Assistant District Attorney for the Harris County, Texas District Attorney's Office from 1971 to 1975. Schneider was a private practice attorney in Texas first from 1975 to 1976 and again from 1989 to 1990. Schneider served as an attorney for Dresser Industries, Inc., from 1976 to 1980. Beginning in 1978, Schneider was a municipal court judge for the City of West University Place, Texas until 1990. In 1980, Schneider was an attorney at Bawden Drilling, Inc., in Texas until 1986 and then at Union Pacific Railroad Company until 1989. From 1990 to 1996, Schneider served as a Judge in the 157th District of Harris County, Texas and as Chief Justice of the Texas First Circuit Court of Appeals in Houston, Texas until 2002. Schneider served as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Texas from 2002 to 2004.[1]
In 1996, then Texas Governor, George W. Bush appointed Schneider to Chief Justice of the Texas First Circuit Court of Appeals in Houston. In 2002, Schneider was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to Justice of the Texas Supreme Court where he served until 2004.[1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Texas
On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senators Kay Bailey-Hutchinson and Phil Gramm, Schneider was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas by former President George W. Bush on May 17, 2004, to a seat vacated by John Hannah, Jr. Schneider was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 7, 2004, on a Senate vote and received his commission on September 10, 2004. He assumed senior status on January 7, 2016, and served in that capacity until his retirement on October 1, 2016.[1][2]
