Michael P. Shea is a chief judge on the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He joined the court in 2012 after being nominated by President Barack Obama. On November 1, 2022, Shea became the chief judge of the court.
Education
Shea earned his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Amherst College in 1989 and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1993.[1]

Shea was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Barack Obama on February 3, 2012, to a seat vacated by Christopher Droney.
President Obama commented Shea's and another nomination, stating, "These individuals have demonstrated the talent, expertise, and fair-mindedness Americans expect and deserve from their judicial system. I am grateful for their willingness to serve and confident that they will apply the law with the utmost impartiality and integrity."[2][3]
Shea was rated Unanimously Qualified for the nomination by the American Bar Association. Hearings on Shea's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 28, 2012, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on April 26, 2012. Shea was confirmed on a recorded 72-23 vote of the U.S. Senate on December 5, 2012, and he received his commission on December 7, 2012.[1][4][5] On November 1, 2022, Shea became the chief judge of the court.
