Having covered major news and political events as a respected journalist, Michael Shure deeply understands the inner workings of government, the people who make it work, and what actually doesn’t work.

But this isn't just about understanding Washington - it is about so much more than that - Michael's passion for protecting our democracy has led him to take the unusual step of going from reporting the news to running for Congress.

After first moving to L.A. in 1992, Michael has witnessed the struggles and triumphs of the area through the years. Central Los Angeles is incredibly diverse, and his work and life here have helped him to understand the common priorities of all residents.

He has worked as a National Correspondent covering politics and everyday stories for CNN, i24, Cheddar News, Al Jazeera America, News Nation, and Al Gore's Current TV. As a founding member of the L.A. based Young Turks, Michael became known as "Epic Politics Man" for his deep knowledge of government and politics.

Michael is proud to have raised his son in Los Angeles and, as a father, believes in building strong communities and a bright future for Southern California.

Michael Shure - Democrat for Congress in California's 37th District
  • Addressing the Homelessness Crisis Radical action is needed in this crisis, and it is needed right now. Everyone’s quality of life is being challenged. We must immediately reverse the trends and get our unhoused brothers and sisters off the streets and into places that will provide for their and everyone’s safety, security, and stability. It will take involvement from all levels of government to finally achieve meaningful change. Mental health desperately needs to be elevated to a societal priority needing renewed attention. I will commit to tackling the other root causes of homelessness with immediate actions to ensure everyone in Los Angeles can live a life with safety and dignity.
  • Protecting Democracy and Voting Rights : January 6th was the tip of the iceberg - I know this because my work has taken me across the country for years, listening to Americans about this growing crisis and telling those stories. In Congress, I will support the work of the January 6th Committee and hold accountable anyone who threatens our democratic rights. Our democracy faces a clear and present existential threat - I can’t stress enough how dangerous this moment is in our nation’s history. For young voters, for the elderly, for minorities, and for our newest citizens, we must fight for strong protections. In Congress, I will fight tirelessly to make sure the John Lewis Voting Rights Act becomes law.
  • Establishing Affordable Housing and a Fair Cost of Living : The people of this District work hard, yet all over Los Angeles, we know that the cost of housing and living must become more affordable. Inflation is a major concern in our communities, so in Congress, I will work to bring down the cost of gas and groceries to relieve the pressure on our families. My Small Business Infrastructure bill will have measures to strengthen our local jobs market, and more jobs mean better wages for everyone. I will work with all levels of government to support the immediate construction of affordable housing and ensure that L.A.’s homelessness crisis is treated as the national issue that it is.
Michael Shure is a leader who knows how to listen. As a reporter he’s heard what is important to Central L.A. and now he’s ready to take your story to Congress and fight for a better future for all of us.

Michael is committed to ending homelessness, defending our democracy and our voting rights, and ensuring District 37 has the jobs and prosperity needed for affordable housing and a fair cost of living. In Congress he will fight for a woman’s right to choose, and urgent action for climate justice.

Campaign website

Shure's campaign website stated the following:

Addressing the Homelessness Crisis

Dramatic action is required to address the growing crisis of homelessness on our streets. Everyone’s quality of life is being impacted while this problem goes unaddressed. We must urgently and responsibly end encampments and get unhoused Angelenos off the streets. It will take involvement from all levels of government to achieve a durable solution, and mental health needs to be a top priority. As a member of Congress I will ensure that all necessary federal resources are brought to bear on this issue. It starts with getting the unhoused off the streets and into stable housing with access to the mental healthcare, jobs and training necessary to ensure a lasting transition. Many unhoused residents in the district are also veterans. A well-funded, more effective, and reorganized Veterans Administration (V.A.) is critical to serving those who have served our nation. All Los Angeles residents deserve to live in safety and with dignity.

Protecting Democracy and Voting Rights

The insurrection on January 6th was just the beginning. I know this because I have reported on attempts to subvert the will of the American people in Republican controlled states across the country. Our democracy faces an existential threat - I cannot stress enough how dangerous this moment is in our nation’s history. In Congress, I will support the work of the January 6th Committee to hold accountable anyone who threatens our democratic rights. We must also go further. I will fight to protect the voting rights of all citizens by working to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act into law and making election day a national holiday.

Defending Women’s Rights

I have been warning for years that Republican-appointed justices on the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v Wade when they had the votes. With the leaked draft opinion in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health the court’s illegitimate conservative supermajority is poised to do just that. I wish that I had been wrong. This is unprecedented in American history. Never before have we seen established rights taken away. This corrupt decision was made possible by Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and radical anti-abortion activists who won’t stop at limiting a women’s right to choose. They are already discussing a nationwide ban on abortion if they take power again. The rollback of our freedoms in this country is something that I will not tolerate as your representative in Congress. I will fight for a bill to protect the right to choose everywhere in America. Roe must be codified into law. We will not go back.

Affordable Housing and a Fair Cost of Living

All over Los Angeles, the cost of housing and living have become far too expensive. Inflation is a major concern I hear from many residents in the 37th district. In congress I will work to bring down the cost of gas, groceries, healthcare, and other bills for our community so that hard-working families have more money to spend on the things that matter most to them. My Small Business Infrastructure bill includes measures to strengthen our local job market, and more jobs mean better wages for everyone. I will work with all levels of government to support the immediate construction of affordable housing and ensure that our city’s homelessness crisis is treated with urgency in Washington.

Taking Urgent Action for Climate and the Environment

Every person deserves clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet. We must act decisively to protect the environment so that future generations inherit a world that allows them to achieve their full potential. I’ve smelled the fumes of the Inglewood oil fields and coughed from the wildfire smoke that chokes our community every summer. As a historic drought tightens its grip on the region, the situation is getting worse. Now is the time to act boldly to address the climate crisis. I support the Green New Deal and President Biden’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030. These measures are critical both for protecting our environment and generating prosperity for the people of the 37th district. In congress I will fight everyday to make rooftop solar more affordable for everyone so that we can lower our carbon emissions and your family’s electricity bills. I will also work to bring solar manufacturing and installation to the district so that south Los Angeles can benefit from the jobs that will accompany the green transition. Now that President Biden has rejoined the Paris Climate Accords, we must live up to our commitments and go even further in future rounds of international talks. I agree with the L.A Board of Supervisors that we must close the Inglewood oil fields so our children can enjoy a cleaner world and a more prosperous future.

Marriage Equality and Justice for All

With the supreme court’s draft opinion on abortion rights, the conservative majority has made its views clear. Not only do they see a woman’s right to choose as illegitimate but all other so-called “unenumerated rights.” These include the rights to same-sex marriage, interracial marraige and contraception. The extremism of this interpretation of our constitution cannot be overstated. Rights that we have enjoyed for generations are now threatened. I reported from the steps of the Supreme Court on the historic day that marriage equality became the law of the land. Our rights are not up for debate.

Healthcare for All and Affordable Prescription Drugs

Healthcare is a human right, and we must ensure high-quality, universal access for all. Not only is it the right thing to do, it also makes economic sense for families and for businesses in our community. The most immediate action we can take to bring down the outrageous cost of living for working Americans is to lower the cost of healthcare. The Affordable Care Act was a good start but we must go further. I support giving all Americans the opportunity to purchase high-quality coverage through Medicare. My mother will soon be 80 years old, so I understand how important this issue is to our seniors. As insurance and pharmaceutical companies make record profits, no one in America should have to choose between groceries and prescription drugs. I support allowing medicare to negotiate drug prices just like the Veterans Administration. When it comes to healthcare we must put people over profits.

Passing a Small Business Infrastructure Bill

Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and engines of economic growth. As they begin to heal from the ravages of the pandemic they still need our help. I will work to pass a small business infrastructure bill to make them whole and ensure they can find and retain skilled workers in good-paying jobs. My plan will include buy-local incentives, tax breaks, loan guarantees, subsidized startup costs, and resources for worker training. Together these policies will strengthen our local economy and ensure it is resilient enough to withstand the challenges of the future.

Ensuring Public Safety

I do not believe that we must choose between justice and public safety - the people of Los Angeles and the 37th district deserve both. Crime is unacceptable and I have zero-tolerance for threats to our community. Residents are entitled to live in neighborhoods that are free of violence and harassment and local merchants should not have to contend with theft and crimes that hurt their businesses. In order to curb crime and ensure just outcomes we must rebuild trust between our communities and the law enforcement agencies that patrol them. I support reforming police departments to include de-escalation training for officers and expanded funding for mental health experts on non-violent calls. In Congress, I will support legislation to create federal standards for police conduct and a universal database to track incidents of abuse across the country. Law enforcement plays a critical role in the safety of our neighborhoods, but trust can only be achieved through transparency. Communities and law enforcement must work together, and as your congressman you will see me work tirelessly to help bridge these divides.

Israel, Palestine, and the Middle East

A staunch and unwavering commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself is an enduring priority for me, and this includes support for the Iron Dome defense system and other critical agreements between our countries. As someone who has worked in Israel, I know that the region is deeply tied to America’s past, present, and future. I support a two-state solution as the best chance for a sustainable, lasting peace so that all peoples’ liberty and democratic rights may be respected. Iran must never be allowed to attain a nuclear weapon, and any deal on this issue must take seriously the broader threats they pose to the region. Iran’s proxies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and groups in Iraq that have attacked our troops, and their neighbors, must be stopped from spreading terror locally and around the world. The Abraham Accords are a positive sign for the potential of greater peace, and this must be expanded to improve the stability and prosperity of the entire Middle East.

Fully Funding Education and Student Loan Forgiveness

Politicians love to say that young people are our future. I think it’s time we acted like it. We must fully fund our education system from universal pre-kindergarten to a high quality university degree for anyone who wants it. That means additional resources for our neighborhood schools as well as better pay and tax breaks for teachers. The rising cost of higher education has made college unaffordable for far too many students while burdening millions more with crippling debt. Congress must act to bring down the cost of attending college in order to expand access and create a sustainable future for higher education. I fully support student loan forgiveness combined with a permanent elimination of interest on student debt. The collection of loans must also be streamlined to reduce cost to taxpayers. If we fail to properly fund education we shortchange our nation’s future and I will not let that happen.

Immigration

Immigration reform is long overdue. Not only is it the right thing to do but study after study shows that our economy is strengthened by those who come to our country striving for a better life. Dreamers are our future alongside all American children. I fully support a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients. I will be an ally to this cause in Congress and give voice to those seeking to expand the American dream. As a journalist, I covered the root causes of migration through Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. I know that our government has a role to play addressing crime, violence and poverty in these countries in order to build lasting solutions to the issues that are causing people to leave their homes in the first place.

Preventing anti-Asian violence

Having covered this scourge as a journalist, I want to give this issue its own space. I will push local officials to create special police investigative units devoted only to these specific crimes. Increased police task forces are part of the solution but they are not the only answer. We also need a community-led system to prevent anti-Asian violence that supports citizen groups and ambassadors who will report and record these crimes. Bigotry and violence have no place in our society, and it is time to take this seriously every day.[2]
