2016

The following issues were listed on Simpson's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Agriculture: We depend on agriculture to feed and clothe our nation and to help meet the needs of many around the world. In order to do so, farmers and ranchers are continually working to ensure that their operations are sustainable and efficient. A wide variety of issues, including transportation, trade agreements, taxes, energy, and environmental issues, directly impact the cost of production, and I believe that Congress should carefully consider the impact of legislation on our farmers and ranchers, working to ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed.
  • Budget: If there is one common theme I hear from Idahoans as I travel the state, it is their concern with the size of the federal budget and the impact our nation’s debt will have on future generations. I couldn’t agree more and believe getting our fiscal house in order must be the first priority of a Congress. That is one of the reasons why I am an original cosponsor of H.J. Res. 1 which would amend the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced budget.
  • Cap-And-Trade: To provide an idea of how committed some in Congress are to cap-and-trade and how little they are concerned about its economic impact, consider the fact that House Republicans offered an amendment to the Democrat’s cap-and-trade bill that would have sunset the bill if in any 12-month period residential electricity rates rose by more than 10 percent. The amendment failed essentially on a party-line vote.
  • Energy: I strongly believe our nation must pursue an “all-of-the-above” energy policy where we explore all technologies and opportunities for increasing our nation’s energy independence. I strongly support the development of wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and other sources of renewable energy that can help improve our economy and our environment. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that our

nation will need its traditional sources of baseload energy including coal, hydro, nuclear, and natural gas well into the future.

  • Guns: The Second Amendment to the Constitution reads: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” I firmly believe this provision prohibits the federal government from denying citizens this right.[20]

Club for Growth Action primary target, 2014

In February 2013, the Club for Growth Action, a conservative Super PAC that endorses and spends money in races that concern government spending and economic policy, launched a website called "www.PrimaryMyCongressman.com." According to the Club for Growth Action, "the purpose of the website is to raise awareness of Republicans In Name Only (RINOs) who are currently serving in safe Republican seats....The website will offer Club members and the general public the opportunity to recommend primary opponents to the incumbents highlighted by Club for Growth Action, as well as to recommend primary challengers for any Republican member of Congress. Club for Growth Action will rotate liberal Republicans through the website to highlight their failed records on limiting government." Simpson was one of the first nine incumbent Republicans to be targeted by the site, which gave him a lifetime Club for Growth rating of 58%.[21][22]
