Incumbent Sally Doty defeated Mike Campbell in the Republican primary. Doty defeated Smith in the general election.

Smith ran in the 2011 election for Mississippi Senate District 39. He lost to W.L. Rayburn in the primary on August 2, 2011. Bill Boerner and Sally Doty defeated David Nichols, II in the Republican primary and will face each other in the primary runoff election on August 23, 2011. The general election took place on November 8, 2011.[2]
