Michael Spaan
Michael Robin Spaan was a judge for the Third Judicial District in Alaska. Spaan was appointed on November 17, 2007, by Governor Frank Murkowski.[1] He retired in November 2015.[2]
Education
Spaan received a bachelor's degree in business administration from California State College at Chico in 1968. He earned his J.D. in 1972 from the University of California at Davis.[3]
Career
Spaan was a law clerk for Jusitce Robert Erwin at the Alaska Supreme Court from 1972 to 1973. In 1973 he worked for Senator Ted Stevens as a legislative assistant until he returned to Alaska in 1976. From 1976 to 1981 he worked with Birch, Horton, Bittner and Cherot as an associate and partner. In 1981 he began work with the Department of Justice in Anchorage. He was there until 1989 when he took a year long sabbatical with his family. After returning from his sabbatical in 1990 Spaan worked with Bogle and Gates, LLC as a partner until the firm went out of business in 1999. He worked at Patton Boggs, LLP from 1999 until his appointment to the Third Judicial District.[3]

Spaan was retained in 2010.[4] The Alaska Judicial Council supported his retention.[5][6]
