Michael Stanford was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 12 of the Texas House of Representatives.

Stanford was a 2012 independent candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 17th Congressional District of Texas.

Campaign themes

2016

Stanford's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Border Security

  • Excerpt: "The need to secure our borders and port's of entry are at a critical stage. The federal government has already stated that they consider it to be of low interest. Therefore it rests on the state to secure its own border. The direct and indirect result of an unsecured border is costing taxpayers billions. I will work diligently to get this accomplished."

2nd Amendment

  • Excerpt: "I believe in the right to bear arms and will defend such right. I believe in constitutional carry, which some of your gun rights activist will not promote because it puts them out of a job!"

Education

  • Excerpt: "I support school choice and believe that quality education is best achieved by encouraging parental involvement, protecting parental rights, and maximizing local independent school district control. District superintendents and their employees should be made solely accountable to their locally elected boards. I will encourage local ISDs to consider carefully the advantages and disadvantages of accepting federal education money."

Health care

  • Excerpt: "I urge the passage of health care reform which results in more affordable healthcare through a market-based, interstate competition. I believe that insurance should not be mandatory and the federal government does not have the right to inflict it upon the citizens of Texas."

Judeo Christian Beliefs

  • Excerpt: "I want to bring prayer back in school. Since the removal of it, societies values have diminished."
