Candidate Connection

Michael Strange participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 4, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Michael Strange's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Fresh Educators Perspective

2) More Stakeholder Involvement
3) Increased Digital Approach for All Students[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

My experience as a teacher, a coach, and now an administrator, gives me a unique vision of the daily obstacles that teachers and students face in the classroom. But more importantly, my experience has allowed me to properly determine simple solutions that can be implemented to overcome these obstacles.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Michael Strange answered the following:

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I've been a teacher for 15 years, the previous 6 years at teacher/coach at Kennedale High School. In that time, I’ve been a trailblazer in implementing technology in the classroom, led the boy’s soccer team to their first ever UIL state playoffs, and coached the girl’s soccer team to back to back UIL State Championships (2015.2016). My experience as a teacher, a coach, and now an administrator, gives me a unique vision of the daily obstacles that teachers and students face in the classroom. But more importantly, my experience has allowed me to properly determine simple solutions that can be implemented to overcome these obstacles.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Let it Go (Frozen) I think it played for 6 months straight in our car, house, backyard...anywhere we took the kids, haha.[3]
What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?
The main job of a school board member should be to ensure that the goals and policies of the school district support student success in the classroom and stakeholder involvement.[3]
What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?
Honestly...We do. At the most basic level, education is about relationships; between a teacher and their students, a principal and their teachers, and parents with their students school. This essential part of learning can be lost in all of the daily tasks and checklists expected of teachers and students and soon a school becomes a business and loses its purpose. Those school districts that find success year after year are ones that keep the perspective of positive relationships and its main purpose in mind, achieving student success. My mentor teacher told me long ago, ""no student will listen to you until they know you care about them.""[3]
What strategies or plans would you advance to ensure the schools are properly funded?
One area that can easily be advanced is Kennedale ISD's involvement in starting partnerships with local business to help fund new programs and in return provide a service to the community. One example could be a new marketing class that allows students to work with local companies to plan and facilitate community events or projects.[3]
What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?
When any discusses school safety they must look at it from two different points of view: 1. safety within the school itself 2. safety from outside the school . In both cases, the most important policy is that students, teachers, & administrators have clear expectations of what to do in certain situations and that these expectations are communicated and practiced with the local emergency responders.[3]
What role do you imagine technology playing in (and outside) the classroom in the future? How would you prepare the district for this?
A school district can make technology a powerful tool for transforming student learning. In addition, the use of technology in the classroom can reinvent our approaches to learning and collaboration, as well as, adapt learning experiences to meet the needs of all learners.[3]

Michael Strange participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 28, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Michael Strange's responses follow below.[4]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Gaining Educators Perspective

2) More Stakeholder Involvement
3) Update School Safety Measures[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

A school district is much like a multi-million dollar business and with that comes with many moving parts and a process that must be implemented with major decisions. With that said, many areas of our school district, Kennedale ISD, are in desperate need of an update. The first one must be school safety measures, specifically finding a system that ensures all entrances inside the school buildings are secure. I suggest we move from the lock and key system and to a digital key fob system. This updated system allows staff to know which doors are being used and when they are used. If a "key" is lost it can be deactivated immediately and all doors can be synced with nearby cameras to know who is walking in the doors.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]
