Campaign themes

2014

Tomlinson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[7]

Education

  • Excerpt: "More charter schools and vouchers to give school choice to parents and children. Disband the disgraceful School Reform Commission. Replace the School Reform Commission with a local board comprised of diverse civic-minded residents, public & charter school teachers and credible local small and corporate business people. Conduct a complete review of school operations and a full audit of where the money is being spent. This will eliminate the waste, political patronage and corruption of our local and state tax dollars and place control and accountability with the parents and citizens of the school district. You should not have to win the lottery to send your child to a good school."

Economy

  • Excerpt: "Reform the crushing regulations driving businesses out of our city. Initiate tort reform to eliminate ‘law suit abuse’ which will improve the business environment. Revise the City and State business tax code, which is overly burdensome, complicated and is a cesspool for special interest and political lobbyists. Legislation requiring the Commonwealth and the City to fund pension plans as part of the Annual Fiscal Budgets; rather than, passing this debt on to our children and grandchildren. These items, combined with a more educated workforce will draw technology and higher skilled jobs to our city."

Government

  • Excerpt: "We need government reform. Support current legislation to reduce the number of State Senators and Representatives saving an estimated $60 million per year. Eliminate known wasteful spending such as taxpayer-funded mailings by our elected officials costing an estimated $14 million per year. Finally, demand that your elected officials submit an annual proposal to reduce government and wasteful spending. We need to reduce the individual tax burden and put the money back in the hands of the taxpayer."

Drugs

  • Excerpt: "Methadone clinics DO NOT work. The millions of dollars spent on inadequate methadone treatment should be spent on fully contained drug treatment facilities where the people with this disease can be treated and fully recover rather than wandering the streets."
