Campaign themes

2014

On his campaign website, Johnson highlighted the following issues:[1]
Public safety

  • Excerpt: "Crime at its core, is about people, places and situations. My approach to addressing crime and public safety in Oakland is driven by three guiding principles: It must be community based and culturally competent. It must be based on data driven policy making, and [i]t must have built-in accountability measures for both our public institutions and the community alike. Public Safety at its core, a public good, and an obligation of the City to its residents. As your City Councilmember I will work hard to ensure that the environment looks safe so that it residents can feel safe."

Jobs and employment

  • Excerpt: "Oakland is becoming a city of haves and have-nots, and there is no other District in the City of Oakland where this rings more true than in District 6. I’ll pursue and implement a “Town & Gown” strategy of public – private partnerships with key academic institutions in District 6 to grow jobs, enhance revenues and revitalize our neighborhoods. Simply stated, I will work with what we have, while we develop the people and the skills that we need to move Oakland forward."

Urban infrastructure

  • Excerpt: "I’ll work vigorously to bring much needed and sustainable community infrastructure back to the residents in District 6. Upgrading street lights, repairing potholes in our streets or maintenance of our sewer systems is essential to every neighborhood city-wide, but the infrastructure of a vibrant community requires much more than that."
