Michael Vargas (Texas)
Michael Vargas was a member of the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District school board in Texas, representing Place 1. Vargas assumed office in 2015. Vargas left office in 2019.
Vargas (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Texas State Board of Education to represent District 2. Vargas lost in the Democratic primary on March 1, 2022.
Vargas represented Place 1 on the San Benito Board of Trustees in Texas. He was first elected to the board in the general election on May 9, 2015.[1]
Biography
Michael Vargas was born in San Benito, Texas. Vargas graduated from San Benito High School in 2005. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Brown University and a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Missouri. Vargas' career experience includes working as the assistant director of public affairs with the City of Pharr, a social studies teacher with Teach for America, a school accountability manager with Hazelwood School District, and a congressional intern with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and Presidential Classroom. He served with the Social Justice Awareness Movement (So.J.A.M.).[2][3]

Opposition
Three seats of the seven seats on the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees were up for election on May 9, 2015. Incumbent Fatima Huerta ran for re-election to the Place 3 seat instead of her Place 1 seat. She faced Place 3 incumbent Yliana Gonzalez and former Place 4 incumbent Joe Gonzalez on the ballot.[4]
The open Place 1 race featured Michael Vargas and returning candidate Rene Salinas. Orlando Lopez, also a returning candidate, challenged Place 2 incumbent Anna Cruz in her re-election bid.[4]
Vargas defeated Salinas for the Place 1 seat. In Place 2, incumbent Cruz won re-election. Joe Gonzalez defeated Yliana Gonzalez and Fatima Huerta for the Place 3 seat.
