Recall reports

An effort to recall Michael Vines, one of the five members of the Isle of Wight County School Board in Virginia, began in March 2022.[1] A recall petition was submitted by Windsor resident Lewis Edmonds in March and was dismissed by a circuit court judge due to the petition signatures not being attested to under penalty of perjury, as required by Virginia law. Edmonds submitted a second recall petition against Vines in April 2022, which was dismissed in June by the same circuit court judge for not meeting the threshold for removal under state law.[2]

Virginia requires recall petitions to be signed by residents of the official's jurisdiction equal in number to 10% of the votes cast in the last election for that office.[3]

Vines was appointed to the board on November 8, 2021.[4]

Recall supporters

Supporters of the recall argue that Vines made “wildly inappropriate, defamatory, and discriminatory” remarks at school board meetings and criticized Vines for leaving parts of his economic interests form blank.[2]

Recall opponents

Opponents of the recall argued Vines' actions did not constitute “neglect of duty,” “misuse of office,” or “incompetence” under state law. Vines responded to the recall petition by stating: “I look forward to continue representing my community" and “I hope that this tainted view that’s been presented to the public does not hurt me in the fall.”[2]
