As a parent and concerned citizen, Dr. Mingyuan (Michael) Wei is running for the RRISD school board because he believes it is time to bring together the district and our communities to ensure educational opportunities for all students to thrive.

He received his doctoral degree in environmental science, followed by a 6 years of research experience in bioengineering field in two U.S. universities. He is currently working as a toxicologist in Austin.

He has actively engaged in serving RRISD community and beyond. He served many community volunteer roles, such as a substituted educator, a member of the school PTA, and a member of various district committees. He is the Board of Directors (BoD) of Williamson Central Appraisal District, BoD of Austin Chinese-American Network, and Committee Captain of the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce.

  • Addressing Funding Shortage & Staffing for Success

Our students’ education is an investment in our community’s future, and I will ensure it is a top priority. I pledge to work tirelessly to secure the funds our schools require. This means advocating for increased state funding, exploring grants, and collaborating with local partners, from major employers to small businesses and nonprofits.

Our educators and staff are the backbone of our schools. I am committed to attracting and retaining the best talent by advocating for competitive salaries, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment. Together, we can build a team that inspires and empowers our students.
  • Championing Educational Excellence Academic achievement is non-negotiable. I will support initiatives that promote STEM education, the arts, and comprehensive curricula that prepare our students for the challenges of tomorrow. By setting high standards and providing the resources needed to meet them, we will foster a culture of excellence.
  • Ensuring School Safety Every student deserves a safe space to learn and grow. I will work to implement robust safety protocols, support mental health resources, and ensure our schools are equipped to handle emergencies. All students’ well-being is paramount, and I will make it my duty to protect it.
As a trustee candidate, I’m here to listen. Everyone’s voice matters, not just the loudest ones. Parents, students, and staff should all have a say before policies are set—not after decisions have already been made. That’s why I want to encourage more two-way communication.
Data-Driven Decision Making: My two decades as a scientist have equipped me with the skills to process and analyze complex data, enabling informed policy decisions and resource allocation.

Relevant Experience and Connections: My experience serving on multiple boards has provided me with a deep understanding of board member responsibilities. Through active engagement and volunteering within the RRISD community, I have built strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Unwavering Commitment: While serving as a school board member is a volunteer role, I am dedicated to making a positive impact on our district. I am committed to working tirelessly to achieve meaningful change.
The most important responsibility of a school board member is to improve student outcomes through policy making, hiring and evaluating the superintendent’s performance, and setting the budget.
