I'm a Tax Attorney who gives his clients sound financial advice every day. I also have long range planning experience from sitting on the Aurora Citizen's Advisory Budget Committee for the past five years. I moved to Aurora, CO in 2015 and bought my first house 18 months ago. I plan to push smarter investments in the Treasurer's office so we get a better return on our investments. I will also explore publicly owned entities to solve our budget woes.
  • Taxpayer dollars should be invested wisely. That means not investing in stocks, bonds, and funds that are incredibly risky. However, that does not mean sitting back and letting taxpayer funds grow at below the market average. A good treasurer has the responsibility to grow taxpayers’ funds as great as possible with the least amount of risk. This is a responsibility that I will not take lightly. I will work every day to maximize your return on your investment as taxpayers in this county.
  • Arapahoe County residents also deserve to know how that spending benefits you. For the treasurer to help taxpayers understand those benefits, it means: Having frank conversations with taxpayers, and making sure all the numbers are both understandable and accessible on the county’s website. This leads to more (and better) conversations about the overall county’s budget and the priorities that go into that budget. The treasurer is in a unique position to have these conversations and connect taxpayers with information they seek. This also supports the County Commissioners, who set the budget every year.
  • Arapahoe County residents should know what programs are available to help your businesses or your households. Whether you cannot pay your property taxes, or your business needs a boost during the pandemic, every program the county has and its requirements and qualifications should be readily available and easy to find. Every dollar that is spent by the county runs through the treasurer’s office, so the treasurer has the best access to what programs are available and how much funding is available for each program. As treasurer, I will make sure taxpayers can easily find these programs and where to sign up for them, should you need them.
A public bank is one of my top priorities and passions. Arapahoe County takes in over a billion dollars every year that we give to a big bank that earns interest off our money while we’re not using it. There is no reason we cannot run that institution ourselves and put that interest back into our pockets where it can be spent on Arapahoe County residents. A public bank could also be a significant jobs boom. Credit Unions would benefit heavily from an additional source of capital—as they do with the Bank of North Dakota—to help keep money in the community and in the hands of our county’s residents.
