Michele Rollins is a Republican donor and former candidate for the U.S. House from the state of Delaware. She is the widow of John W. Rollins Sr., a multimillionaire "who made his money in pest control, truck leasing, outdoor advertising, and other businesses" in Delaware.[1]

Career

Michele Rollins is a prominent Republican in Delaware who was married to the founder of Orkin pest control, John Rollins Sr., who also served as the state's lieutenant governor from 1953 to 1957.[2] She graduated from Georgetown University with an undergraduate degree as well as a law degree. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rollins practiced law in the federal government with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Interior.[3]

Rollins herself has been active in politics as both a donor and a candidate. In 2010, she ran for Delaware's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives but was defeated in the primary by Glen Urquhart.[4] In terms of donations, Rollins actively gives to both charitable and political causes. Delaware Today noted, "Michele Rollins and her late husband, John W. Rollins, have been synonymous with generous giving for several decades."[5] In 2010, she told the Delaware News-Journal of the philosophy that she and her husband embraced, "If we work for money to hold on to it, what's the point? It's what you do with your money. I want it for what I can do with it, not just to have."[6]

In addition to her activities in Delaware, Rollins has been described as "perhaps Jamaica's most influential woman, with property and interests not only on the island but all over the US." She owns the Rose Hall resort, which works to develop property outside of Montego Bay.[7] In 2013, Campaigns and Elections named Rollins one of the top 10 influencers in the state of Delaware. The magazine noted, "Rollins is one of the state GOP's primary rainmakers. She entered the fray in 2010 during her run for Delaware's only House seat and remains a player in the state party."[8]
