Noteworthy events
Felony and misdemeanor charges (2023)
In January 2023, Barrientes Vela was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 600 hours of community service, and five years probation after she was found guilty on two felony charges of tampering with records.[1]
In January 2020, Barrientes Vela was indicted on one count of aggravated perjury, two felony counts of tampering with evidence, and three misdemeanor counts of official oppression. The indictment alleges that members of Barrientes Vela's staff withheld, destroyed, and fabricated records in their response to a subpoena. The subpoena was part of an investigation into accusations that Barrientes Vela was personally charging security fees at a public Easter weekend event in 2018. Barrientes Vela was also accused of lying in sworn statements. Former deputy Christopher De La Cerda also accused Barrientes Vela of “creating a work environment that was intimidating” and of being “hostile.” Barrientes Vela plead not guilty. [1]
