Michelle is a wife, mother, and concerned citizen with a strong heart for service. She settled into life in the Lowcountry after marriage 8 years ago and is firmly invested in improving the quality of life available to residents of Charleston and District 114. Michelle was appointed Commissioner of Charleston County Parks and Recreation by the county council in 2021, she is a member of the Charleston Area Urban League and leads food distributions at the Pink House, a neighborhood resource center in West Ashley. Never satisfied to sit on the sidelines and complain, she has completed over 500 hours of service in the Charleston community. Michelle is Mrs. South Carolina Cosmos 2022 and uses her platform to promote civic engagement among women & minorities. She is also a team leader of the Charleston Area Justice Ministry. She learned the value of organization and discipline as the daughter of an Army Lieutenant Colonel (now retired) which she uses in her personal and professional life. Michelle co-manages a busy household that includes husband of eight years, Justin, and two fun-loving children, Belle and Theo, whom she teaches to dream big while making a big difference.
  • I will listen to the people. I will always evaluate all relevant information before making a decision.
  • I value integrity and transparency from our elected officials and I will be accessible to the people in my district.
  • Better decisions are made when there are different voices at the table. If elected, I would be the first black woman to hold this office in district 114. We need more diversity in the State House of South Carolina, not just in race, but in age, social economic status, and career. As a wife and mother of a 7 and 5 year old, I understand what it's like raising a family in 2022 and the difficult decisions parents make every day. My leadership will promote more creative solutions to address the various issues facing the Charleston Area.
I am passionate about improving our schools and getting South Carolina of the bottom for academic achievement lists. Creating more affordable housing because it is becoming increasingly difficult for working families to attain homes in the Charleston Area.
One of my all time favorite heroines is Harriet Tubman aka Moses. I recently read the book God is A Black Woman by Christena Cleveland and there was a part of the book the author discussed Harriet Tubman and pondered the moment she decided to escape slavery for her freedom. I often wonder myself what that moment was like for her to go back.... she made 19 trips back to the South to free other enslaved people, including one especially challenging journey in which she rescued her 70-year-old parents. I would like to follow her example of bravery and courage because that is what's needed to make out state more equitable and justice for everyone.
Empathy, listening, and critical thinking. Empathy is what will help me relate and understand the people in my district especially the people I may not agree with. Listening effectively is a great quality of my success as a legislature and asking the right question to make sure I fully understand what's being conveyed. Putting empathy and listening skills together will help me research the best solutions for the problems facing district 114 by thinking critically about all data/testimonies presented to me.
I would want to be Storm from the X-Men. I think controlling the weather would be a useful ability and I could prevent droughts and famines. Also, it's pretty cool that she can fly.
