Campaign themes

2016

Chatterton's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Fully-Funding Our Local Public Schools

We need legislators willing to break from the mistakes of the past and make the tough choices on K-12 education funding. I'm not willing to let inaction in Olympia put another generation of students at risk of missing out on a quality education. I'll demand the State Legislature find a solution to the school funding crisis; otherwise, the politicians in Olympia shouldn't get paid.

Balanced Budgets & Performance Audits

The biggest job of the State Legislature is passing a state budget every two years. I'll work to hold politicians accountable for how they spend our tax dollars, posting the state budget online and regularly conducting performance audits. The Legislature was wrong to slash funding for the performance audit program earlier this year. I'll work to have that funding restored.

Real Relief From Traffic Congestion

Pierce County residents need more transit options to connect them to their jobs in other parts of the Puget Sound region. Pierce County deserves its fair share of transportation dollars, and I will advocate for more transit money for the Puyallup Valley in our state budget.

Building A Strong, Sustainable Economy For Everyone

I work with small businesses nearly everday and know they're the backbone of our economy. I'll work to reduce their tax burden and eliminate any unnecessary red tape holding them back.

I also support raising the minimum wage to keep pace with our changing economy. No one who works full-time should live in poverty. As a recent graduate of our public higher education system, I know how important it is to make college more affordable. That includes cracking down on predatory, for-profit student loan lenders.

Homelessness, Mental Health Treatment, and Substance Abuse

I wish our state and county legislators had been more engaged on this issue before it reached the point we are at today. We need elected leaders who are proactive and willing to always think about the challenges that people different from themselves face.[1]
