Michelle Fields is a journalist with the Huffington Post and has made regular appearances on Cashin' In, a financial show on Fox News. Fields has previously worked for Breitbart News, the Daily Caller, and PJ Media.[1]

Career

Michelle Fields began reporting in 2011, when she did an interview with actor Matt Damon at an education rally. At the time, Fields was a reporter for Reason.TV, a libertarian news site. According to The Washington Post, the exchange between the two "was her first on-the-scene reporting job for Reason" after graduating from Pepperdine University.[2] In 2015, she told The Hill that after that, "I woke up in the morning, and I was a reporter."[3] She began working for the Daily Caller in 2011. While there, she covered the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City when she and a videographer "were struck by NYPD officers as police tried to clear Wall Street of protesters."[4]

In 2014, Fields confronted Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at a climate rally in New York City. She asked Kennedy what kind of cellphone and car he had. According to the New York Daily News, Kennedy "pointed at PJ Media reporter Michelle Fields and even grabbed her microphone."[5]

Fields joined Breitbart News in November 2015 as a political reporter. At the time, Breitbart Chairman Steve Bannon said she "represents the essence of what Breitbart News looks for in a reporter—brains, guts and tenacity."[6] Fields resigned from the organization in March 2016.[7] On May 23, 2016, Fields began as a reporter for the Huffington Post, covering Donald Trump's presidential campaign. In a statement, Fields said, "After the tumultuous events of the last few months, I am ready to get back to writing and reporting on what is without question the most bizarrely fascinating presidential race of my lifetime (and, perhaps, any lifetime)."[1]

Journalistic approach

In a 2011 interview with C-SPAN, Fields described her approach to journalism. At the time, she was working for the Daily Caller. She told Brian Lamb,[8]

I am a video journalist. I would say that what we're doing is almost like citizen journalism which is basically when an individual who doesn't have that much training in journalism has the tools and modern technology to capture a live event but doesn't have a background in journalism. ... We're asking questions that Congressmen maybe don't have the answer to, they don't have talking points for. Or when we're going to a protest, we're going on the ground. We're not doing what a typical journalist does, which is they go, they have their mic, they do their stand up, maybe they interview two or three people, get a B roll and put it together. Instead we're on the ground with the protestors. If they march five miles, we march five miles with them. So that we can capture those moments that people are capturing with their iPhones and uploading on You Tube.[9]

Alleged assault by Corey Lewandowski

According to a March 2016 report by Politico, Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski "forcibly yanked Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields out of [Trump's] way after his press conference in Florida."[10] Lewandowski and the Trump campaign accused Fields of fabricating the event. Fields, Washington Post reporter Ben Terris, and Daily Caller editor Jamie Weinstein claim to have seen the altercation. Fields filed a police report against Lewandowski on March 11, 2016.[11] On March 29, Jupiter, Florida, police charged Lewandowski with simple battery.[12]

On April 13, 2016, Politico reported that Lewandowski would not be prosecuted on the charges.[13] That night, Fields told The Blaze that she planned to pursue civil action against Lewandowski and the Trump campaign.[14] In a statement on April 14, 2016, Palm Beach County Deputy Prosecutor Adrienne Ellis said, "We're not charging him because he was reacting to what he perceived as a potential threat."[15]

In her 2016 book, Barons of the Beltway, Fields included a brief note to the reader concerning Trump, Lewandowski, and herself. She wrote, in part, "I wrote this book to tell the story of a political class that has lost its way and lost touch with the people it is supposed to serve. ... But as a professional, I never intended to–and never thought I would–actually become the story myself."[16]
