My name is Michelle Medley and I am a current Rolesville Town Commissioner. I moved to Rolesville 12 years ago with my wonderful husband and 2, now adult children ages 19 and 24. I am a new business owner in town. I recently opened the first coworking and event space in our town earlier this year. I have private offices available as well as open flex space, training rooms and conference rooms. I have been involved in various local community programs within our town such as being a a member of the local PTA, Boosters, Red Cross, Rotary, 2 local Chambers and so on. I am an advocate for our town and our citizens and want to continue to do so for the next 4 years. We are a town that i growing and I want to help ensure that we continue to grow in both a smart and responsible way.
  • Economic Development ~ First and foremost, we have to update our Unified Development Ordinance aka UDO. UDO lays out the rules for the physical development of property. It designates the zoning of properties that will result a built environment that meets the goals of the Comprehensive Plan. so that we will be current with the needs of our growing town. Also, I want to continue to be diligent in my decision making process when builders submit requests for building. To continue to be vocal in terms of expanding our infrastructure so that we will not continuously have to play catch-up to our rising residential growth.
  • Responsible growth ~ True growth can only happen when we are inclusive of everyone. To continue to be a town whose town officials advocates for diversity, inclusivity and equality for all To continue to put our citizens first and to assure them that we respect their free choice to move to Rolesville with the expectation of a living a life with a certain type of quality of life. We have to keep this in mind in our decision making processes. To make sure that as we grow, we are mindful of the needs of our town and our citizens. To be sure that we have a plan in place for our proposed layout for residential growth as well as our commercial, industry, restaurant and even our green-way space.
  • Continue to support Small Business~ As a small business owner myself, I feel it is important that we continue to support our small businesses and our small business owners. We can do this by continuing to build relationships with the small business owners, create incentives to assist small businesses, listen to their concerns, possibly even offer incentives to the local commercial landlords to work with their tenants in terms of establishing affordable leases to both parties. Let all parties work together in establishing opportunities for the town, the landlord and the tenant/small business owners.
I am very passionate in finding ways in which to administer some form of gun control. I believe we have the right to bare arms, but my concern is how do we keep the guns out of the hands of those who seek to commit crimes and hurt others. I understand that there is no crystal ball or a litmus test to determine who should have a gun and who should not. This topic is extremely sensitive. I get there are many sides to argue on this topic. I want to see gun control in terms of protecting our students in schools, our citizens in churches, night clubs, large and small outside gatherings. This topic has many arguable talking points, but I want to see process and changes to how we can began to protect our citizens.
I love Maya Angelo and all that she stood for . Her internal plight that gave her an eternal light to turn her life into the mighty and courageous life she led.
My favorite poem of hers is 'Still I Rise' is about the eternal fight of the Woman and Slavery of Humanity. This poem encourages all who care not to give up!: But instead to continue to fight.
"You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may tread me in the very dirt, But still, like dust, I'll rise.
When I feel like I am being held down I think, what would Maya say? What will Maya do?
I have experience. I am committed to finishing the job. I am compassionate and capable of making my own decisions. I am honest and transparent. I am smart. I am a negotiator. I have integrity.
To be honest and forth coming/transparent, to do your due diligence/be prepared, to not be afraid to speak up, to be available and committed.
When I ran and won my first election as a town commissioner here in Rolesville in 2015, I was the first ever elected Black official in Rolesville NC.
Stuart James Investment Bankers, Bear Stearns
I worked there for 2 years before deciding that being a stock broker was not the career that fulfilled me. I felt more compelled to help people. Public service was the life I was destined to lead.
I honestly believe that all I have seen and done while holding this position has been very transparent. I feel comfortable when I have to answer citizen questions with complete openness knowing that everything I do for our town and our citizens is honest and transparent. When I start having to hide what I am doing as an elected official, then it is time for me to leave the public service world.
Depending on how far ahead (or behind) your town is, experience should be a major consideration. Rolesville has a lot of updating and catching up that they must do, especially in terms of our ordinances. It is a small town that was use to being a small town but is now a town experiencing phenomenal residential growth. Over the past 4 years we have made decisions that are new to our town. We are creating the history of our town and building upon those decisions with new decisions daily. Moving forward, I believe that we continue to use this history/experience to continue to build our town. Having to play catch up at this point could be challenging and result in delays in decisions that need to be made today, not tomorrow.
But, in all fairness, we all have to start somewhere. Being a quick study could prove helpful.
Truth, honesty, integrity, patience, mediation skills, patience, transparency, decision making skills, resiliency
