I am the parent of 2 Roseville Area Schools students, one elementary student and one middle school. I've been an upper elementary school teacher since 2009 and have been recognized with three teaching awards including being a Top 11 Finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 2024. I am a Roseville citizen with a deep-rooted family history of service within the community spanning 70 years.
- I trust and support teachers. Teachers are drawn to the field to make positive changes in their community and have the unique set of skills to do just that. We must let the teachers teach and listen to what they need to meet the needs of our students.
- As a career educator, I know that all people want to succeed and when they have the tools to do so, they will. I support policies that equip all teachers and students to be successful. This includes strategies, curriculums, and programs that ensure our graduates are college and career ready, as well as proficient in core subject areas. And, it also includes ensuring a healthy, safe, equitable, and respectful learning environment. School policies that ensure that students’ have access to nutritious food, hydration, safety, security, health services, a sense of belonging, dignity, and a wide variety of avenues to provide a sense of achievement must be prioritized equally alongside academic learning to lead to strong academic achievement.
- To be successful, we must be financially secure and ensure that our limited resources are utilized in a way that yields maximum return on investment.
I am personally passionate about literacy instruction and teaching neurodivergent children. I am also passionate about elevating the field of teaching to draw the most skilled educators as a cornerstone of a highly functioning, harmonious, and productive society.
Integrity and transparency are the most important characteristics of an elected official as well as the sincere desire to listen to and serve the needs of their entire electorate and not just special interests. Clear decision making, an ability to build relationships and work with people from all background, and vision to advance policies that uplift all of society are also essential.
The purpose of a school board member is to represent the interests of all of the citizens and students and to serve together as a united governing body. Together, school board members approve policies that provide general principles for guiding the management of the school district.
I would like to have positively impacted my community and those close to me.
While it wasn't the first historical event, I, of course, remember the attacks of September 11 vividly as does every other person that was old enough to grasp what was happening on that day.
I believe my very first job was as a youth softball umpire for at least one summer.
My favorite book is a Wrinkle in Time because it highlights the exceptionalism that exists in everyone, as well as how their place in the universe affects the universe as a whole.
The purpose of a school board member is to represent the interests of all of the citizens and students.
All citizens of the Roseville Area School District are my constituents.
Good teaching comes from the heart. Teachers are some of the most educated, talented, and passionate among us, able to meet the basic and academic needs of numerous children with diverse needs simultaneously. Good teaching is reflected in academic achievement of their students, but also how a child feels in the teacher led learning environment. It is important to listen to the needs of the teachers in professional development instead of just offering a one size fits all approach to professional development. Teachers are intrinsically motivated to improve and seek out ways to do so. There isn't a one size fits all approach to teaching and there can't be a one size fits all approach to professional development.
The majority of funding comes from the state legislator. As a voter and a member of Education Minnesota, I have been a long time advocate for fully funding public schools and continue to reflect that in my vote.
It starts with belonging. Individuals that are seen, heard, represented, valued, and feel connected, don't intentionally hurt the community that supports them. Policies and procedures that ensure the school building is secure and that adults and children in a building know how to quickly respond to a threat, keep students safe from outside threats.
Simply put, more funding is needed at the state level to support the mental health needs of students, faculty, and staff. Concerning the mental health needs of the staff, it starts with support from the community and trusting partnerships from the families of the students. And, it includes policies that support the teachers right to teach, feel safe in their environment, and minimal disruptions to the students' ability to learn. It also requires quality health care plans that cover mental health needs and HR policies that don't stigmatize mental health needs.
Concerning the students, it cannot be the role of the teachers to meet the mental health needs of the students. This can only come from trained professionals, ideally in the school building, but at minimum in community partnership with the schools.
I would like to continue to build on the current district policies outlined in the district's strategic plan.
An ideal learning environment is one where the students' basic needs have been met so that they can focus on their desire for knowledge, understanding, curiosity and meaning. The means that they are well fed, hydrated, feel safe, secure and a sense of belonging, are physically and mentally well, treated with dignity, and have a variety of avenues to provide a sense of achievement.
I am encouraged by the direction that the district has taken in reading instruction and want to ensure they stay the course.
Artificial intelligence can be greatly helpful in freeing up teacher time. For example, it can create highly engaging passages and prompts tailored to a student's interest to build reading comprehension. It can also help students in meeting research needs. But, it can't replace human voice and human ability to communicate. Developing writing, for example, is about developing the skills to effectively communicate and AI can't replace that.
As an upper elementary teacher that was not trained in how to teach foundational reading skills, I have been deeply affected by students who came to me lacking in those skills. Literacy affects a person's entire life and path in life. Those students drove me to train myself and become an advocate for strong literacy instruction throughout school.
