As a choir director in Chippewa Valley

Schools since 2012, Michelle Levine-Woodman knows the everyday struggles that our children and families face. Michelle has built her classroom and career around a culture of respect and understanding. This has led to opportunities for real, impactful connection with her students.

Michelle looks forward to creating those same connections with voters.
  • All people deserve equal rights and opportunities!
  • I know that we need to invest in our schools to deliver pre-K for all Michigan four-year-olds, continue to provide breakfast and lunch for every public school student, recruit and retain teachers, and expand mental health services in schools.
  • I promise to listen to all her constituents and vote for policies that reflect the needs of my neighbors in the 62nd District.
Women's rights, especially reproductive rights are incredibly important to me, however, as a teacher, education is one of my biggest passions. I am so invested in educational policy that I am currently pursuing a doctorate in this area.
I am always willing and interested to talk to voters, no matter their party. I enjoy engaging with people who think differently than I do.
Josef's Bakery in Grosse Pointe. I sold baked goods and helped the bakers and cake decorators. I worked there for 3 years.
Princess Mia Thermopolis, AFTER the awkward high school phase obviously.
"I Can See Clearly Now" -Jimmy Cliff
Building relationships is incredibly important in any situation! The legislature is definitely a place where relationships are beneficial. Building relationships help people communicate and work together successfully. Legislators must be willing to work with members of any party.

I learned what it means to serve others from my mother and my church. My mother was a teacher and the president of her union. Our telephone was constantly ringing with teachers calling with their concerns and seeking her advice on things like maternity leaves and bereavement days. She always made time for them and their names became commonplace in our house, like members of our family. At church I became the Vice President of our parish council when I was only 16. I was entrusted to run council meetings before I could even drive myself to the church. These experiences led me to pursue a teaching career and become active in my union. Teaching middle school choir in Chippewa Valley has always been my dream job. The idea of giving it up is the hardest thing about running for office, but my students, their families, and the teachers that teach and live in Chippewa Valley deserve a representative who represents their interests, who is involved in the schools, who comes to events and delivers awards, and is a visible presence in the community even during this time of mostly virtual interaction.
  • You should know what your State Representative is doing and it should not be difficult to acquire this information. Transparency is crucial if there is to be any trust in those holding public office. You should also be able to easily access your representative to air concerns, express opinions, and give suggestions. I promise to be accountable to my constituents and be a visible and active part of the communities I serve.
  • Our rivers, waterways, and Lake St. Clair are a defining part of this area's identity, making House District 24 a beautiful and desirable place to live and we must protect our environment if we want to keep enjoying these benefits. From record-high water levels in Lake St. Clair causing erosion and property damage to the Clinton Township waste site emitting methane gas threatening an adjacent elementary school, we need leadership that takes these problems seriously and will work to protect property values and public health.
  • With sewer overflows polluting Lake St. Clair, we need a serious response to infrastructure in this district. We must update and repair our roads, bridges, stormwater systems, and seawalls in order to keep House District 24 a desirable place to own a home and operate a business. We need to invest in our communities right away as continuing to wait will only make these issues more difficult and more expensive to tackle.
Schools are an integral part of a community and teachers get a good look at what issues are facing that community. As an educator, I've seen students who don't get enough to eat at home, families who cannot afford to take their children to the doctor, and parents who can't stay home from work when they are sick. All of these issues are made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. We need more educators in Lansing who will prioritize the needs of students, families, the public school system, and its employees. Investing in a robust, supportive, and equitable system will remove barriers for students and give them a strong start in society. Quality public schools also raise property values for everyone because people want to live where their children will get a good education.
I know how to listen to a wide range of voices and find harmony. Literally, as I've spent years as a choir teacher for Chippewa Valley Schools, and figuratively, as I have listened to and weighed the concerns of school administration, school staff, parents, students, and the school board. I knew that even if we didn't always agree, we all had the common goal of meeting the emotional and learning needs of our students and serving our community. I understand what it means to be creative and accommodating to help each and every student succeed and to be an advocate for my community. I will take that same approach as a State Representative.
My first job was working as a storegirl for a small local bakery that my family frequented on the weekends, called Josef's. My job mostly entailed assisting customers and packing orders...and resisting eating all the yummy things in front of me. As I worked there longer, my duties grew-I got to learn how to write messages on cakes, drizzle chocolate for decorations, even assisting the cake decorators and learning to make frosting flowers. Not everyone got to learn those last jobs. Those jobs had to be earned through trust and precision. Each cake decorator had different personalities and preferences. Their job requires attention to detail and they had a lot of cakes to decorate! They did not have time for mistakes or ego. But spending time behind the scenes, in the back, with all the different characters that made up Josef's (including Joe himself) and the attention to details and personalities has come in extremely handy in every job I've had.

It can certainly be valuable for a state legislator to have previous government or political experience, however I do not believe it is a necessity. A characteristic that would be more beneficial is that a legislator makes it their top priority to represent all of the citizens in their district or state.
Education, in particular our public schools, are at the top of the list. The issues there go well beyond just funding. Being the Great Lakes State, the environment is always going to be a pressing issue for Michigan. We can't ignore what is happening with our planet and how it affects our state. Lastly, as anyone who has driven our roads can attest, Michigan's infrastructure is a serious mess and needs major overhauling and updating.
Being able to build relationships with other legislators is not only beneficial, it is crucial. Without those working relationships, it would be impossible to get the important work done that is needed in the coming years. We cannot continue to operate as two completely separate parties that will not work together toward common goals.
Lori Stone is a current State Representative that I would love to emulate. My favorite thing about Lori is that she tries to connect with everyone. When out in the community, people feel comfortable coming up and chatting with her as if she was an old friend, even if they are meeting her for the first time. I would love for my constituents to know my name, feel comfortable reaching out to me, whether in person, email, or phone call and feel listened to and valued.
