The 9th Congressional District of Michigan held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.
Democrat Sander Levin won the election.[1]

Primary: Michigan has an open primary system, meaning any registered voter can vote in any party's primary.
Voter registration: Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by July 9. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 9.[2]

Incumbent: Incumbent Gary Peters (D), who was first elected to the 9th District in 2008 ran for re-election in the newly drawn 14th District. Sander Levin (D), who was first elected to the 12th District in 1992 and previously represented the 17th District from 1983 until 1993, ran for re-election in the 9th.
This was the first election using district maps based on data from the 2010 Census. Michigan's 9th Congressional District was located in the southeastern region of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It included Oakland and Macomb counties.[3]

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Michigan's 9th District became more Republican because of redistricting.[8]

- 2010: 62D / 38R
Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Michigan's 9th Congressional District had a PVI of D+5, which was the 146th most Democratic district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by Barack Obama (D), 59-41 percent over John McCain (R). In 2004, John Kerry (D) won the district 54-47 percent over George W. Bush.[9]

2010
On November 2, 2010, Peters won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Rocky Raczkowski (R), Adam Goodman (L), Douglas Campbell (G), Bob Gray (I), and Matthew Kuofie (I) in the general election.[15]
