Incumbent Dan Kildee (D) defeated Paul Junge (R), David Canny (L), and Kathy Goodwin (Working Class Party) in the general election for Michigan's 8th Congressional District on November 8, 2022.

In July 2022, Bloomberg Government's Emily Wilkins wrote, "Kildee, first elected a decade ago, is one of a handful of lawmakers who became GOP targets thanks to redistricting. His once-safe district, which includes Flint and Saginaw, became more Republican with the addition of Midland. And as one of more than two dozen endangered incumbent Democrats, the House majority will be decided in his own backyard."^[1]

At the time of the election, Kildee represented Michigan's 5th Congressional District, a position to which he was first elected in 2012. Kildee campaigned on bringing jobs back to Michigan and raising worker wages, lowering insurance premiums and the price of prescription drugs, and clean water.^[2] Kildee referenced his record in the U.S. House, saying, "I’m focused on fighting inflation and lowering the cost of gas, groceries and prescription drugs. I’ve worked to support our local law enforcement and pass bipartisan legislation, supported by Republicans and Democrats, to reduce crime. And I’ve helped pass new laws, like the bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act, to support Michigan jobs and grow our economy."^[3] In the 2020 general election, Kildee defeated Tim Kelly (R) 54.5% to 41.7%.

Junge was a former prosecutor and news anchor who worked in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under former President Donald Trump (R). In 2020, Junge completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. Junge campaigned on opposing tax increases, cutting spending, banning sanctuary cities, and securing elections.^[4] Junge said, "By stopping the failed Biden-Kildee agenda and returning to the successful policies of the Trump Administration, we will strengthen our economy, lower gas prices, secure the border, and expand opportunities for every American."^[5] In 2020, Junge ran in the general election for Michigan's 8th Congressional District and lost to incumbent Elissa Slotkin (D) 50.9% to 47.3%.

The outcome of this race affected the partisan balance of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 118th Congress. All 435 House districts were up for election.

Republicans won a 222-213 majority in the U.S. House in 2022.

Daily Kos calculated what the results of the 2020 presidential election in this district would have been following redistricting. Joe Biden (D) would have received 50.3% of the vote in this district and Donald Trump (R) would have received 48.2%.^[6]

Post-filing deadline analysis

The following analysis covers all U.S. House districts up for election in Michigan in 2022. Information below was calculated on June 27, 2022, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time.

Fifty-three candidates filed to run in Michigan's 13 U.S. House districts, including 28 Democrats and 25 Republicans. That's 4.08 candidates per district, a decade-high, and up from the 3.93 in 2020 and 3.64 in 2018.

This was the first election to take place under new district lines following the 2020 census, which resulted in Michigan losing one U.S. House district. The 53 candidates who ran this year were two fewer than in 2020, when 55 candidates ran, and two more than in 2018, when 51 candidates ran.

Two districts — the 10th and the 13th — were open. That was one more than in 2020 and the same number as in 2018.

Rep. Lisa McClain (R), who represented the 10th district, filed to run in the 9th district this year, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D), who represented the 13th district, filed to run in the 12th. Rep. Andy Levin (D), who represented the 9th district, filed to run in the 11th district against incumbent Rep. Haley Stevens (D), making the 11th district the only district where two incumbents ran against each other.

There were four contested Democratic primaries this year, down from seven in 2020 and nine in 2018. There were nine contested Republican primaries, a decade-high. That was up from eight in 2020 and one in 2018.

There were six incumbents in contested primaries, up from four in 2020, and one in 2018. That was also one fewer than the decade-high of seven in 2012.

Five incumbents — three Democrats and two Republicans — did not face any primary challengers. One district — the 4th — was guaranteed to Republicans because no Democrats filed to run in the primary. No districts were guaranteed to Democrats because no Republicans filed.

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Mike Bishop (R) defeated Suzanna Shkreli (D), Jeff Wood (L), Maria Green (G), and Jeremy Burgess (Natural Law) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Bishop faced no opposition in the Republican primary. Melissa Gilbert (D) withdrew from the race prior to the primary, but still appeared on the primary ballot. She was replaced by Shkreli on the general election ballot.^[19]^[20]^[21]^[22]^[23]^[24]
