The Michigan Marijuana Legalization Amendment will not be on the November 6, 2012 statewide ballot in Michigan as an initiated constitutional amendment.

The measure would have made marijuana legal for most adults age 21 and older. Specifically this means that adults (who have not been incarcerated) would have been allowed to legally use, carry, cultivate, manufacture, acquire and sell marijuana. However, people would not have been allowed to operate boats, aircraft, motor vehicles or dangerous/heavy machinery while using marijuana.[1]

  • A poll was conducted from January 21 to the 25 by EPIC-MRA for the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV. The poll sample 600 likely voters and asked if they would support a potential ballot proposal to legalize marijuana use in Michigan. The poll reportedly has a plus or minus 4 percentage points margin of error.[3]

In order to place the measure on the November 2012 ballot supporters must have collected a minimum of 322,609 valid signatures by July 9, 2012.

Committee for a Safer Michigan, the primary group supporting the initiative, said in early January 2012 that they planned to launch petition circulation efforts in mid-January.[1] In July the group stated that they had only collected 50,000 signatures by the deadline and would therefore not be appearing on the 2012 ballot. They also announced that they will now focus on campaigning and fundraising for the 2014 ballot.[4]
