Michigan Republicans share in strong national gains

LANSING, Michigan: Nationwide, Republicans showed strong gains in state legislatures. The number of Republican state senators grew 15.1%, and the number of Republican state representatives grew 24.0%. This growth translated into gains in 85.2% of state chambers, resulting in 20 new Republican majorities. The following charts illustrate the changes to state majorities before and after the election:

In Michigan, Republicans were able to bolster their majority in the senate while obtaining the majority in the house. In the Michigan State Senate, the GOP saw an 11% increase in representation. They fared even better in the Michigan House of Representatives, obtaining a 19% increase in representation along with the majority. Republican Rick Snyder won in his bid for Governor, giving Michigan Republicans control of both houses and governorship. Across the country, Michigan was one of 12 states in which the GOP obtained a trifecta, bringing them to a total of 20 trifecas.
