Supreme court elections

The 2014 Michigan Supreme Court elections did not alter the court's partisan composition. Two Republican incumbents, Brian Zahra and David Viviano, were re-elected, while Democratic candidate Richard Bernstein won the seat previously held by a Democratic justice.

In 2014, a total of 327 judicial candidates ran for office in Michigan, including 211 incumbents. Of the total, 196 candidates faced no opposition in the November election. Only 16 incumbent judges participated in contested races, and three were defeated.

Interesting races

  • Two district court judges were unseated by challengers. Judge Brian MacKenzie was defeated by attorney Travis M. Reeds. MacKenzie had drawn attention in 2013 due to a lawsuit alleging he unlawfully dismissed domestic violence cases.[1] Reed defeated MacKenzie with 50.2% of the vote.
  • Judge Dean Ausilio of the 37th Judicial District Court, who was appointed to the court in 2012, was defeated by challenger Suzanne Faunce.[2]
  • Although Mark Braunlich filed for re-election to the district court, he was inactive during the campaign because he had been appointed to a circuit court. Despite this, he still earned 41.1% of the vote. The winner, Jarod Michael Calkins, took Braunlich’s seat on the First Judicial District Court.
