Three seats on the Middletown Township School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbents Susan Griffin and Ernest Donnelly filed to run to retain their seats. Incumbent Gerald Wexelberg did not file to run in the election. Helene Henkel, Mark Bouthillette, and former board member Christopher Aveta challenged Griffin and Donnelly in the general election.[1] Henkel won a seat in the election, along with incumbents Griffin and Donnelly.

Middletown Township School District is located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The county seat of Monmouth County is Freehold Borough. In 2013, Monmouth County was home to approximately 629,672 residents, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau.[2] In 2011-2012 school year, Middletown Township School District was the 16th-largest school district by enrollment in New Jersey and served 10,110 students.

Demographics

In 2012, Monmouth County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 40.3 percent of residents aged 25 and older in the county had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 35.4 percent for New Jersey. The median household income in Monmouth County was $84,746, higher than the state median of $71,637. The unemployment rate in the county was 6.6 percent, below the statewide rate of 9.9 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Middletown Township Board of Education consisted of nine nonpartisan members who were elected at-large to three-year terms. Candidates for the Board of Education must be 18 years old and have resided within the district for at least one year before their election or appointment. There are no term limits.

Candidates were required to submit nominating petitions with 10 signatures to the county clerk by the filing deadline on July 28, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. Voters had to register by October 14, 2014, to vote in the election.[4][5]

NJM ranking

The magazine New Jersey Monthly ranked 339 New Jersey high schools in 2012 and 2014. The analysis for the report was conducted by the research company Leflein Associates. The report weighted school environment at 1, student performance at 1.5, and student outcomes at 2.1.[7]In 2012, Middletown's north high school ranked 128th and the south high school ranked 105th. While the south school jumped up to 92nd in the 2014 rankings, the north school dropped to 136th.[8]
