Four of the seven seats on the El Paso Independent School District board of trustees in Texas were up for general election on May 6, 2017. In his bid for re-election to District 1, incumbent Robert Geske defeated Mariah Lauritzen. District 3 incumbent Susannah Byrd ran unopposed and won another term on the board by default. District 4 incumbent Diane Dye and former board member Russell Wiggs defeated Timothy Groover, but neither of them received a majority of the votes cast. Because of this, a runoff election was held on June 10, 2017, where Dye defeated Wiggs to retain her seat. The race for the District 5 seat included incumbent Chuck Taylor and challenger Miguel Rueda. Taylor won re-election to the seat.[1][2][3]

Rueda highlighted the following statement on his campaign Facebook page:

Dear Neighbor,

Children are our future. We must do everything we can to guarantee their success because their success is necessary for our community and society to flourish. Education is essential to success because it creates opportunities for everyone, no matter their background.

I really value education because it has created so many opportunities for me. I am the son of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States in search of a better life. It is because of sacrifices my parents made that allowed me to pursue my education. After high school, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve where I learned invaluable life lessons, shaped my character, and found my passion for public service. After leaving the Marines, I earned my Bachelor in Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Texas at El Paso and soon joined the U.S. Army Audit Agency as an auditor. Today, I am two classes away from completing my Master’s degree in accounting from UTEP and currently working as a budget analyst for NASA where I work developing and managing the annual budget for the Rocket Propulsion Test program at the White Sands Test Facility.

As a former auditor for the federal government, I interviewed numerous “financial managers” and unfortunately there’s a lot of wasteful spending in the government. Some government financial managers have an “it’s not my money” mentality, which translates into unnecessary spending.

Voters in El Paso recently approved a $668 million bond “aimed at modernizing and right-sizing the El Paso Independent School District.” Whether you voted for it or against it, it is now our responsibility to ensure that the district has absolute transparency and accountability with your taxpayer dollars. Construction projects and acquisition of new property such as schools buses and technological equipment should not exceed their budgets and milestones and deadlines should be met.

My background in accounting, audit, and budget would add value to the EPISD school board, specially overseeing the voter-approved $668 million bond.

While only citizens of District 5 in Northeast El Paso can vote for me, the decisions the EPISD school board vote on, affect the entire district.

Thank you for taking the time to read my message. To be able to spread my message to as many people as I can, I need your help. I greatly appreciate your support, whether it be a campaign contribution, a like, comment, or share on Facebook, or volunteering for block walking.

Thank you very much for your support![5]
